If you want to teach 11 -18 year-olds, then you need to look for secondary schools rather than high schools (which are usually 11- 14, and do not exist in most English counties). Signing up with a 'supply' (substitute) teacher agency would be the best way to find out what the local schools are like. The majority of full-time jobs come up in May/ June/ July (resignation date is May 31st) but you may find some (especially maternity leave cover etc) advertised at other times of year. Try googling (use the UK pages at www.google.co.uk) to see what's around........searching for supply+teaching+agency+reading might throw up something useful.

"high schools" in America are known sometimes as "colleges" in the UK (our "colleges" are UK's "universities")
A very good school in Reading is Bradfield College, a boarding "high school" started out for boys but now admit girls. Gorgeous campus. Lived there for a few months and fell in love with the place. G'luck!

Most independent and council funded Schools and Colleges advertise their teaching vacancies on the local council website or newspapers. Berkshire has six unitary councils - Newbury, Reading, Windsor & Maidenhead, Slough, Bracknell and Wokingham, each with their own website. So it's advisable to contact their Education or Human Resources department for more information.
Reading Council. http://reading.jobsgopublic.com/ Bracknell Forest Borough Council. http://www.bracknell-forest.gov.uk/index.htm Wokingham Council. http://www.wokingham.gov.uk/sys_upl/templates/PT_J Windsor Council website. http://www.windsor.gov.uk/ Newbury. http://www.newbury.gov.uk/ Also Ofsted - Office for standards in Education post their findings for each School or College they inspect. http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/reports/ Shane
