Late-nights taxis when the clubs close Posted: Tue November 9, 2004 08:56 AM UTC
Okay, I have of course read the many warnings about not taking taxis hailed off the street. My question is this. If I walk out of a nightclub at closing time in the middle of the night, there will (I assume) be swarms of taxis waiting around. If I call for a taxi as advised, how in the world would I find which taxi was the one I called for? How exactly do club-goers get a taxi safely in such a situation?
Thanks for any insight!

When living in DF, of course I took taxis, even alone as a girl in the mid20s, at night whatsoever. Taking a taxi from the street is no problem if: - You check the driver's licence (MUST be shown on the window!!) - Have another person that writes down the number of the taxi (for the driver to see!) - Take a taxi with taxometer
Sorry, this was not quite the answer to your question, but maybe it helps you though.

My experience, limited though it might be, would recommend that you ask the club owners, managers or even the cashier to please get you a taxi. Stay inside until the taxi arrives and the caller confirms that it is reliable. If there are alot of taxis outside they might just direct you to a driver they know. This would be just as good. This presumes that the club you enjoyed is honest and not in the business of ripping off its own customers. Every club and restaurant I have asked for this help has eagerly agreed and insisted I stay inside to wait. And I am not talking just about expensive places. Often I was waiting with Mexicans who were receiving the same service. I personally think that a taxi found waiting outside a club would be risker that a taxi you flagged down, unless it is vouched for by someone who does not want to see you harmed. In general people with legitimate businesses do no want to see their customers harmed. And Mexcans, except for an immoral few, are naturally hospitable. Enjoy Mexico; bob

I was just in Mexico City (I'm still not sure what I think of that place...), and after having read all the warnings about the taxis I was completely paranoid about the millions of different taxis they had. But as the alternative was to go walking in the dark streets as we did the first night (not recommended!!!), we hailed a cab from the street the second day.
He didn't have an ID-card or taxameter, and he was sitting with a gun in his hand the whole time!!! I was so afraid that I was holding the door and was ready to jump out in case he tried something... :) But we got safely to our place and we took different taxies a few more times without nothing happening.

Ohhhhhhhhhhh.. myyyyyyyy god! Did the taxi driver had a gun????
Ooops...
I'm mexican, I lived there until 2 years ago.. I was lucky and never had the "need" to take a taxi in the night. NOw.. trying to put myself in your situation....
In Mexico, the people.. as any other country, will take advantage of the tourists if they can (Now I live in Europe and have listened to soooo many cases... )
Try to look like you are really familiar with the city. Ask to other people how much a taxi charges from one place to another.. IF the taximeter goes too quickly,, ask to the driver.. The taxi and any other public transportation is really cheap..
Don't walk alone in the streets at night. Make mexican friends.. we are really open, if you ask for help (IN A NICE WAY)... people will help you. Try to remember: we are really sensitive, so try to be as polite as you can: use all these words..."excuse me", "thank you"," your welcome"... really, we get angry if people is not educated.. Where I live now,, people is really rude (from my point of view).. they don't use all the words I wrote...
Keep your eyes on your personal things, don't ware shorts all the time.. People in Mexico City never wear T-Shirts with shorts... unless you are a tourist....
If something else come to my mind I will tell you
