Getting married in Belgrade
Posted: Sun November 7, 2004 02:26 PM UTC
Hi all,

My girlfriend and I will be travelling to Belgrade next year to get married. I have been trying to find online resources on things like bands for hire, marquee hire and other wedding related services, but the language barrier make it a bit difficult

Any suggestions?

Best regards
Geir

We have expected to arrange most of the wedding ourselves but we need to get hold of a large party tent (marquee) and a funky band. Do you have any idea where I can find a company who do tents and similar - is there a yellowpages service or similar in Belgrade?

Thank you for the insights...

We are both Norwegians living in London so both the distance to Belgrade and the language make this a bit of a project :)

One more quick question....

After ceremony, dinner and dance we are going to have a wedding after party - any suggestions for club / cocktail bar that could host something for an international crowd of people mostly in their late twenties / early thirties?

Thanks again for your assistance :)

Good question :)

We looked at London and naturally Norway, but since most of our friends will have to fly in from different parts of the world anyway and we have a few family members living in Belgrade it seemed like a cool place to get married / have a big party. Also, not too many of our friends have been to Serbia - a wedding is always a good excuse to travel :)

how many of your friends will be on a wedding? picking up the good place for wedding party depende on number of people. and what kind of music would you like to listen? and would you like to rent the whole place just for you?
greetings,
Milana

Milana,

Most of the younger guests will go to the after party, I guess about 70-80 in total. Most of them are around 30 years old so we will be looking for some sort of nightclub. Both a separate area /reserved space or a smaller club/bar would be options I would look at. How long can places in Belgrade stay open - we would like to have the after party start around 23:00. It would be great with a DJ that knows his happy house and other classic uplifting tunes like stuff from "Dimitri from Paris" (playboy mansion) and similar.

i reccomend club Anderground, or F6, or Sargon. Anderground & Sargon are big discotheques, f6 is smaller. but you should call them to see is it possible to arrange something for 70 people.

Really cool idea to get married in Belgrade. I feel that I should give you a slight warning about the paperwork related to foreigners getting married in Serbia. Like Serbian citizens foreigners need to provide several documents as per the local law. Here is what they look for:

- proof of birthplace/date.....basically like a "fresh" paper version of a birth certificate that is less than 6 months old

-proof of your "unmarried" status...

-valid passport

I suggest that you contact the British or Norweigan Embassy in Belgrade. Contact the one whose passport you hold. They'll have experience with the local marriage law and will give you guidance and typically provide the necessary paperwork to satisfy the local marriage requirements. If you plan to have a church ceremony on top of the civil one (civil is a must under the law), check the requirements of the church you plan to get married in. For Serbian Orthodox churches they'll typically ask for proof from your local parish priest that you are unmarried. Another good place to start inquiring about the paperwork would be the Embassy of Serbia & Montenegro in London.

All this stuff I wrote is personal experience and stuff I learned before the wedding of a family member in Serbia who holds only foreign citizenship.

While the paperwork business can drive you up the wall, planning the party on the other hand is pretty easy in Belgrade. It's easy to find a place to hold the party at, because the selection is huge. The cost is also significantly cheaper than in the West. You can plan the whole wedding in less than a month.

Hope you have an awesome time!

i did nt read all the forum; but you ll have a great time of course
just as a foreigner you ll have some problems
i m french and married in zagreb (croatia) my russian wife
and we met a lot of problems

* our embassies (more french than russian) where we have to register the event
* the city hall where we had to bring a lot of papers for registration
* the language, event if i speack croatian nad my wife too they insisted to have a translator
* the traduction of papers french to croatia, russian to croatian and the opposite later
* the phonetic, after the ceremony, i was not married with my wife, cause the "ou" of her name became "u"
* she was not marriued with me cause russian administration made a mistake on my name

ok, may be some other one but i have to say that it was a great time and after the ceremony and before the lunch we made a auto cruise in zagreb, stopping and taking pics every where in the main place of the city

and i have to say that the ex YU hospitality is so great !!!

best whishes

Ok, I aso got Married in Belgrade and i did not have any problems in finding the things that you are looking for! as for the problem of getting married, are you aware that you will have to have a translater and you also have to register with your embassy as in serbia you have to have proof that you are not already married and this takes 14 days to prosess with your embassy and then another week with the local council! you need to have everything arranged (documents etc) atleast 1 month before in BG, otherwise you may find that you can not get married here!
good luck, any Q or advice you can contact mdwhough@hotmail.com and i will be please to help you as i did the same thing and i am still here in Belgrade :))

My son planning to get married in Servbia in March but he needs proof of never being married. I've been calling around New York to attempting to find where to get such a certificate but so far no luck. How have others solved this problem?

Re: Re: Getting married in Belgrade

as i said in the email, You must go to your embassy atleast 3 weeks before and fill out a declaration, which will be pinned on the wall of the embassy for 2 weeks, this is so that anyone passing may (if they know you) write that they know you to be married! Yeh, stupid hey?? but that is how it is! also this must be translated by an authorised translator and stamped! after this all is ok!
but if your son does not know serbian so well, he will have to have a translator at the wedding, 200 euros. also silly!! i know serbian pritty good and i still had to have 1. guess that they just wanted the cash?

if you need anything doing with the embassy, my company is actually your first point of contact. so if you need any help, let me know!

Keti... Here in the states we don't have any such document. Every state keeps its own marriage records, so there isn't any one place to find out. You would need to write to all 50 states to inquire. It's easy to prove you got married, but hard to prove you never were.

That is why i said that you have to go to the Embassy! the Embassy is a forigne office! therefore, you do not have it in The states ? you have to do this in Belgrade! the reason that they do this is because people in Serbia can prove if they have not been married here as they have a book that proves that they are not or that they are, "Maticna Kniga Vencanih" as you do not have this! the only way for you is to come to Serbia go to the American Embassy on Knez Milos and do as i said before! you have no other option! you will also have to have your birth certificate translated and authorized by the embassy in Belgrade. Serbia will not accept any document if it has not been stamped or created in Serbia.

So, stop looking in America, take a holiday and get to belgrade :)

Keti.....All embassys in Belgrade do this! it is a serbian Law! stupid 1 but that is how it is! and as it is impossible for me or most forigners to prove that we have not been married (think about it, i have lived in many countries, i would have to get a statement from every country in the world to prove that i have not been married, idiotic!!) however, this may change in the future. My mother inlaw is the president of the Serbain court and they are changing the law to make it more user friendly for us foreigners. Probably because i complain to her every day:):)

anyway, if you take the steps that i said, it is very easy! i had to learn the hard way, with no one to help and i nearly missed my own wedding because of all this red tape! so i hope i can now help someone els to have a wondeful peacefull wedding:):)

Thanks for all the research Keti and the good advise Matt. I'll be in Servia (Backa Topola) for the wedding in March. I've got my tickets already, only $616 round trip from Rochester NY. I'll forward this information on to my son so he can get the needed paperwork out of the way.
