Boston Salem

How far is Salem from Boston?
Does one catch a bus?
Catching a bus from Salem on a sunday to Boston airport how long must I allow?

Should I get a flight from New York to Boston or is there a better way?

My plans are to fly to New York then visit Boston then Salem and fly back to Edinburgh from Boston.

Advice on travel and hotels would be helpful.

September next year meeting new friends in Salem is my plans next year 2005.
Thanks people.
Cheerie!

Probably your best bet would be to take the Commuter Rail from North Station to Salem. You can go to www.mbta.com and find the Newburyport/Rockport Line under the Commuter Rail dropdown for the schedule. It takes about 30 minutes each way.

As for flying between New York & Boston, it depends on your priorities. If you don't mind spending the money, definitely fly. It's less than an hour up in the air and if you're in a hurry it's the way to go. But if you're more budget minded then take the bus. The Fung Wah bus goes between NYC and Boston for $15 each way. See www.fungwahbus.com for more info.

Hi,
Edinburgh,...I used to live in Boston for 13 years...Salem is about 45min. -1 hr. north of Boston, depends on the traffic.

Here are the sights for the local buses out of South Station: www.peterpanbus.com
www.greyhound.com

and the number to call for info is: 1-800-343-9999
and you may want to try this Greyhound # 1-800-231-2222

Now if you are in NY and you want to phone ahead or just find info out: There is the Port Authority Bus Terminal,
41st & 8th Ave,
the phone number there is: (212)564-8484

Now being a Hospitality major, I do not recommend the downtown hotels for you..that' s is only if you have the cash to spend...they roughly run $250.00 a night in Downtown Boston....Check out the John Jeffries House, at 14 Embankment Road, Boston, MA 02114
There tele. is (617) 367-1866
This is a small bed & breakfast in historic Beacon Hill. Really nice and quaint...and inexpensive also. Beautiful setting. I think you will enjoy yourself.

Hope you have a great time in Salem, I sure did. Especially one Halloween! :0

Take care.

Cheerio,

Michael

Yup, the Newburyport/Rockport line runs on Sunday. Unlike the line that runs by my house...

I agree. Take the commuter rail to Salem. You won't have to sit through Boston traffic. The commuter rail is convenient, easy, & quick. Go to www.mbta.com for schedule, maps, & fares.
The Fung Wah bus from NYC to Boston that was suggested above is a good, cheap option. I've taken it several times. It takes about 4 hrs. I think it's easier than flying. Sure, flying from NY to Boston is only about 30-45 mins, but to get to the airport, wait for the flight, get on board, etc etc that takes time too. Plus, getting from NYC to JFK or LaGuardia by taxi costs a pretty penny...more than the $15 one-way bus fare to Boston!!!

Yes I was going to suggest maybe going to train NY to Boston - I don't know whether the times and fares work out well, but by the time you get to the airport and wait, and then fly, and then have to get from the airport to the city it's quicker by train. And also more relaxing and you have more space at your seat. Bus would work too.

I was just in Salem for Halloween. We took the train from North Station in Boston., Rockport line. It was quick and easy. Much better than sitting in traffic!
