Yes, bistecca alla fiorentina IS a must, as is ribollita!! I don't recall most the names of most of the restaurants I went to in Florence, but nearly all of them were extremely good. There were several good ones in the Oltrarno area.

Go to the Restaurant Giannino on San Lorenzo near the Piazza S. Giovanni, the home of the original "Bistecca alla fiorentina". Wonderful porterhouse steak, charred on a flameless grill to be pink on the inside, rubbed with salt and pepper. Sometimes olive oil is rubbed on with a drizzle of lemon juice. Buon Appetito. Ciao

For lunch, go where the locals go. When we toured Florence our guide took us to his favorite lunch place. It was quite an experience.
From my tips on Florence:
>Trattoria da Rocco. Situated in the San Ambrogia Mercato, this is a most unusual place. We told the guide to take us to where he usually ate lunch. this was it.
This glass enclosed eatery had tables along both long walls with doors opening into each table, similar to a British railroad car. Down the center was an aisle for the waiters. At one end was the open kitchen. At the other end was the open wine cellar.
When diners finished eating, they exited their door. We slid in to our table as the waiter was cleaning it from the center aisle. Our driver translated the menu for us, and we ordered. the wine flowed like water, and the food was delicious. Furthermore, it was INEXPENSIVE

Try the Trattoria Angiolino, located at Via S. Spirito 36/R. Tel. 055 2398976. Cross the Ponte Vecchio to the Fort Belvedere side and hang a right on Borgo S. Jacopo, which changes to Via S. Spirito. It is located two blocks up on the right, just past the Ponte S. Trinita, but prior to Ponte Alla Carraia. Good food, great atmosphere, reasonably priced.
Enjoy.

Prices varied for Florentine Steak, but expect to spend anywhere from 35 to 40 Euro (no kidding). It is the most expensive steak I have ever eaten.

Hi there, Joan is right Trattoria Rocco is one of the best and affordable places to go for lunch. Pasta dish is around 3 Euro and a Secondi around 4 Euro. There you can save the money you'll need for the bistecca in the evening. It's true a bistecca is around 35 Euro but do it like the Florentines eat one together. When I was in Florence in September we spent 39Euro for a bistecca but we were 3 people eating it together I think the piece had about 1kg. My friend from Florence took us to the place in Florence to eat bistecca. It was somewhere in the S. Spirito area and just everyone ate meat there. Unfortunately I can't remember the name but I'll look for the business card when I'm at home tonight and tell you tommorrow. Another great place to eat local food during lunch time is Trattoria Gozzi at Piazza S. Lorenzo, it's hidden behind the vendors stands. If your in Florence during the winter time you might be lucky and they have ribollita. They don't have a written menue the padrone will tell you the daily dishes.
The whole area near Piazza S. Ambrogio (Trattoria Rocco) is full of great eateries, from very expensive (Cibreo) to cheap but good rosticcerias.

Thanks Silke Fabulous! Now Trattoria Rocco is a must try on my list. We need to find someone to interpret the Italian menu! We’ll also check out: S. Spirito & S. Ambrogio area I’ll also look out for ribollita. Now, I’m down to the place for real good bistecca. Silke, I’m waiting my luck on your searching of the business card. Giannino or Perseus?? We might have to skip breakfast and lunch for dinner meal of a gigantic steak for 2 people! It’s great to do food search, so fun. Did anyone try Trattoria Sostanza or II Latini? There are on Frommer’s book? Are they touristy? Regards ann

Had a wonderful Florentine steak at The Accademia Restaurant in October. Also, the Golden View Open Restaurant on the Arno over looking the Ponte Vecchio was wonderful as well.
