the town of puerto natales is pretty miserable and sad lookin...i'm assuming that if you're wanting to go there, you probably are going to either torres de paine or for the navimag boat to puerto montt. it's a pretty amazing journey i musy say seeing bright pink flamingos in front of near antarctic mountains. you probably don't want to stay in the town itself for too long, but if you need a place to sleep, hostal danicar is pretty good. it's right on top of one of the bus companies that shuttle back and forth between puerto natales and punta arenas.

To give you some more details :
- stay about 3 days in Puerto Natales : the day you arrive per boat by Navimag (or per bus from Punta Arenas or other places - I said Punta Arenas, because it's the closest city doted with an airport), one day to get a fast visit of the awesome Parque Nacional Torres del Paine (proposed by a local tour company), and the day you leave.
Of course, you may decide to hike and trek in the Parque Nacional : so, you could chose to stay much longer.
- You don't need reservations : generally, Puerto Natales, as any small village, is full of private homes who lodge travelers. As the previous member said, it's a tiny village ("miserable" is a bit strong... it's just tiny) and they welcome their big number of people in ... December-January !!! Still, there are plenty of "residential"... If you feel the need to book, I wrote the phone number of the Residencial I stayed in on my Puerto Natales page : have a look
- you can reach Puerto Natales per bus (from Punta Arenas, El Calafate (Argentina) and northern cities), per boat (Navimag, a cargo designed to lodge travelers for 4 days of an unbelievable trip along the chilean fjords : be careful, you have to book if you want to sail during January - www.navimag.cl). As I told you, the closest airport is in Punta Arenas (I would say that it's about 3 hours by bus from Puerto Natales).

Enjoy your trip !!!

I am in Chile right now and I just completed a 6 day 5 night tour in Patagonia. Our tour was booked by www.visitchile.com and we first spent 1 day in Punta Arenas and then the next day we took a 3 hour bus ride with Bus Fernandez Company to Puerto Natales. Bus Fernandez also stops at the Airport in Punta Arenas both ways. It is a 3 hour bus ride.

Puerto Natales has lots of hotels, hostels with different prices. I would recommend you book in advance if you are going in the middle of the summer. We stayed at one called Hotel Los Ladrilleros right by the water. Hotel was nothing special. The tours to Torres del Paine are all day from 730am to 730pm. It is not close and most of the road is gravel road and it can get pretty tiring after a whole day. Puerto Natales also has nice restaurants. We went to one called Cristal and they had some really nice food and excellent service. Food in Chile is basically very cheap. We have been trying hard but we could not spend more than 70CAD for two people in some nice restaurants in Santiago and Patagonia alike. If you are staying in Punta Arenas make sure you go to restaurant Brocolino on O'Higgins road. You will remember that food for the rest of your life.

Hope you have a nice trip.
