Bonn Where in Bonn?
Posted: Sun October 31, 2004 09:19 AM UTC
Hiya everyone!

Next weekend we will be visiting Germany for the first time! So excited!!

We will be staying in Cologne, but will be taking the train to Bonn for the day.

When we are there we would like to find a pub that my husband did some work in some years ago! Its called Fiddlers and its an Irish bar.

Any ideas on opening hours, directions from the train station? What is the general atmosphere in there?

Many Thanks in advance!

Hi,
cou can take the bus no. 623 or 634 from the main train station to "Bonn-Endenich" . You leave the bus at "Magdalenenplatz". It takes only 8 minutes to get there.
The street is called "Frongasse".

Have a look at their website:

www.fiddlers-bonn.com

It is really a nice pub. I like the atmosphere, so i think you will enjoy it.

Have a nice stay.

Gunter

I agree with Gunter. Endenich is like a small town encapsulated within the bigger city. The only disadvantage being that Endenich is a bit separated from the other nice areas of Bonn. If you want to shop, this is right in the city centre; the pedestrian zone begins next to the (curiously small) train station. On the other side of the tracks is the "Südstadt", IMO Bonn's nicest area -- wonderful town villas with gorgeous facades. If you see a nice restaurant and are hungry, you might just as well eat there -- the Fiddler's is typically Irish (to which you might be used)and quite expensive.

Thankyou! I hope that we can enjoy a few beers there!

Just another question...I am looking up train times and fares from Cologne to Bonn and Cologne airport to Bonn.....its quoting 17.40euro!!! This seems very expensive - it says its an IC train and wont give me any other price info for other options - RE and RB...what is the difference between these? and are they likely to be cheaper options?

Thanks

There are a huge number of cheaper options:

First some explanation:
IC -- that's an Inter'City train
RE: -- Regional Express -- Commuter Train, but not stopping at the smaller stations
RB -- RegionalBahn -- slow commuter train stopping everywhere.

The region is served by an excellent Public Transportation Network, the VRS. (Traffic Network Rhine-Sieg). There also are metro trains linking Cologne and Bonn, and those should definitely be much cheaper.

The S 16 and S 18 metro trains both run between Cologne and Bonn train stations. You can easily get from Cologne Airport to Cologne downtown with an S-Train. If you want to go to Bonn from the airport, it will be better to take the airport express bus.

You can download an English network plan here (PDF-Format):

You probably wanna consider buying a weekend-ticket or a day pass for the region Cologne/Bonn. There are many tariff options, but you should pay no more than EUR 10,-/person/day for the pass. The tourist info at Cologne airport should be able to help you.

Hope this helps.

:-) I'm sitting in my Bonn office supposedly working on a presentation I'm supposed to give on Tuesday. VT is an excellent thing for distracting yourself from your duties... :-) Too bad I'm busy next weekend, too, we're having a major basketball tournament day on Sunday. Othwise I might have dropped in at the Fiddler's for a dram...

The reason that the price for the IC trains on short distances are that high is that they are not used by local commuters.

Cologne and Bonn are part of the same public transport authority VRS. As the VRS has its own tariff structure the fares are not given at the DB timetable.

A single ticket from any stop in Cologne to any stop in Bonn is EUR 5,60.
There is also a day ticket for EUR 12,10. And also a mini group day ticket (2-5 persons) for EUR 16,40 - this ticket is valid on weekdays however only past 9am.
