Ko Samet Koh Samet or Koh Samui!
Posted: Sat October 30, 2004 10:33 AM UTC
Hi everyone,

I am coming to Thailand with my girlfriend for the 3rd time in January and want to spend a week in a nice beach resort.

I have been to Koh Samui once before, I was actually there when 911 happened :-( It was obvisouly the end of the rinay season so was very quiet being Sept.

I am looking at going back there again, but as it is high season I am wondering how different it is going to be. I hear things about it being very touristy, but I did not feel that when I went, maybe because of the time of the year? Most bars were empty etc.

I am a very young 30 yr old and my girlfriend is only 27, and we both absolutely love going out dancing and partying, so I would like to know if Koh Samet offers a good combination of relaxation in the day and nice bars/clubs in the evening?

One thing I LOVED about Koh Samui was eating on the beach at a restaurant with my feet buried in the sand, candles being the only light etc. does this sort of thing happen on Koh Samet as well and if so is the East side the best for this?

I know I want the best of both worlds, quiet and a nightlife - I know this is possible somwhere, is Koh Samet right for it? THANKS! :-)

Koh Samet is very different from Koh Samui - in my opinion it's a very Thai place with the majority of people there coming from Bangkok for short breaks. There are a couple of resorts on the west side of the island I think but all the places on the east (to my knowledge) are bungalow set ups, each with their own restaurant on the beach and basic amenities.

The beaches are small and perfectly formed but there isn't much in the way of raving nightlife - not on the scale of Samui anyway.

The restaurants are all on the beach so finding twinkling candle light to eat by is not going to be a problem. And there are bars that play music and sell yummy cocktails but there aren't any clubs to speak of.

I really like Samet so I don't want to put you off completely but I'd say if you liked Samui then maybe you'd be better off going there again - Samet may be a bit too quiet for your tastes.

;o)
