First Time in Sydney

I am thinking of coming to Sydney for a few weeks before Christmas and was wondering if anybody could recommend a mid priced hotel near the centre of town.
Also, could you suggest any cool bars and restaurants where I could sample traditional Australian cuisine and meet up with typical Ozzie locals as I just love their charm.

Go to wotif.com.au This is a last minute (14 day in advance) hotel booking site, and I've used it to stay at some pretty nice hotels for a reasonable price throughout australia. As well as the CDB you might want to consider kings cross, surry hills, potts point, rushcutters bay, pyrmont, or ultimo . They are all suburbs within easy walking distance (some more than others) to the city. www.whereis.com.au is another handy site if you are trying to work out where things are.

Traditional Australian cuisine? what's that? If you were to wander the streets, you'd find out traditional aussie cuisine is thai, indian, italian, cafe food, japanese - take your pick you can find anything. One thing for sure its fresh and not expensive. Different areas tend to specialise in different cuisines. Try Newtown for thai restaurants and some decent pubs. Go to Leicchardt for Italian.

You'll have a great time.

Hi Brett. I'd suggest either Darling Harbour or The Rocks as areas to look at for a hotel. I've got some in my Sydney Tips, with all the details.
There are literally thousands of restaurants in Sydney - areas to check out include The Rocks, Newtown, Crows Nest, Oxford Street, but there are plenty, just wander around. Traditional Aussie cuisine you don't want - that means either British food or pies, chips with gravy...forget that! Mod-Oz, which is a blend of our wonderful fresh ingredients with Asian influence, is what you're looking for, plus seafood.
Best of all to look for are BYO (Bring Your Own wine) restaurants because they're much cheaper - you can buy a very drinkable bottle of wine for as little as $5 and the restaurants usually charge a couple of dollars for corkage. That's a lot cheaper than buying restaurant wine, which is typically three times the retail price. We also have just about every type of cuisine you can think of. It's not unusual to have, say, a Thai, Italian, Chinese, Greek, Oz, Lebanese, seafood all within a few metres of each other.

Speaking about traditional AAAAAussie food, there is something you shouldn't miss. That is the Sydney Rock Oysters. They are fabulous. There is a great selection at Jordon's in Harbourside at Darling Harbor.

Seafood you should eat if you get the chance:
Western Rock Lobster
Moreton Bay Bugs
Barramundi
Red Schnapper (or pink, but red is better)
Yabbies

As # 2 said, www.wotif.com is the way to go! Many hotels to choose from & photos to give you an idea. I liked
Vibe Hotel Rushcutters Sydney
100 Bayswater Road
Rushcutters Bay Sydney 2011
Close to the city, Kings Cross, some good clubs there, right on Rushcutters Pk, a peaceful park [Nicole Kidman has house in the area] & near the top areas of Double bay, Paddington - Oxford street & Bondi Beach.
Sydney is so beautiful, try & do a harbour walk if possible.
I don't know if you will meet many Aussies, place seems to be full of people from all around the world nowadays!!.

Many good ideas above, but I would also recommend staying at No. 1 Grantham Street which is in Potts Point, and asking for a harbour view room. For a harbour view, within walking distance of the CBD I don't think it can be beaten. There is a local bus to the city from the end of the street, and the Sydney Explorer bus also has a stop nearby.
You can find it as above or as Grantham Executive Apartments on any Google search.

Try looking up my pages for Sydney. It's a wonderful place and I agree with all the advise above.

We stayed at the Metro and had a great time there. It is a fully self contained apartment style place right in the city. Only a walk away from the Rocks, Darling Harbour, Circular Quay, Chinatown etc.

Right accross the road was the Slip Inn. That's the pub where Mary Donaldson met Prince Frederick! Cheap meals........Steak and mash etc. for $5 - $10 and it's right in the city. Even has a grocery store right next door!

Meeting up with locals would be a bit dodgy in Kings Cross though. So be a bit careful where you choose to drink. I found the Slip Inn to be relatively friendly and easy going.

Happy travels.............Louise

Hi, probably the closest thing to traditional Aussie food is a pub meal. For this, I would recommend Forresters in Surry Hills. However, there are so many other influences in Sydney cuisine that if you look up, for example, http://sydney.citysearch.com.au/section/food_wine/
then you will not find a section for "Australian cuisine" because it doesn't really exist! But some cheerful, typical Sydney-style eateries I would like to recommend... Phamish on Liverpool St, Darlinghurst. Hugo's Pizzeria (and funky bar) on Bayswater Rd, Kings Cross (see my restaurant tips for details and persuasion!), the Opera Bar down by the Opera House at Circular Quay (also in my Sydney tips). Thai food is reknown for being very good (and popular) in Sydney. I would like to recommend going for a pre-dinner drink at Ravesi's on Campbell Parade in Bondi, followed by Thai dinner at Thai Terrific on Curlewis Street (just around the corner). Mmmm... I'm hungry! Enjoy yourselves!
