Newcastle under Lyme Europe on $5 a Day
Posted: Wed October 27, 2004 02:39 PM UTC
Many years ago, long before VT, Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, etc. there was a book called Europe on $5 and $10 a Day. At the time I thought this was a huge amount of money to travel on per day and felt I could do it on much less.

I was just wondering what young people today consider to be, what I used to call, a suicide budget? I suppose the major difference these days is that I used to hitch-hike which isn't common these days ...

Interesting question, might go over better on the Misc. forum...

As a teen, we would go to the seashore (a few hours drive) and get by with 10-20 dollars. All pitched in for gas, found free parking many blocks from the beach, dodged beachtag sellers and enforcers, ate cheapest boardwalk junk food available. After marriage, carting 2 kids along, a cheap day is $200!

Hiya Alastair,

I believe (from people much younger than myself!!) that the under-25's now consider £20-30 a day a low budget, for most countries worldwide.

Of course if they are here in rip-off Britain, they probably need to budget more like £80 a day!!

I remember those books from the halcyon days of the 70's!
