You'll have loads of fun in Groningen.
Lots of bars/pubs and ofcourse its a university city so lots of crazy students out there ;-) Beware of learning Groningen language though... the neigbouring province Fryslan might not appreciate it ;-))) nor would the rest of Holland understand a word you're saying hahaha Weather in January till March can be cold, but not much more than -5C during day (and that would be extreme ;-) So bring some warm sweaters and an umbrella... since well its raining all the time... Welcome to Orange country & Enjoy! Ronald

Don't bring anything. Just buy more warm clothes when you are at Groningen.
The weather will be cold, especially Easterly winds will freeze the ears from your head. Our average South Westerly winds will bring wet air from the ocean, dumping everything from snow till icy rain. Well, if you are lucky we will get some sunny days in between. In mid February there will be a chance of having a sunny day with temperatures around 15 deg C as a pleasant exception. You will have not enough time to explore all 160 Groningen city bars (see: http://www.vvvgroningen.nl/?mID=37&cID=63). Don't stick at Groningen. Take the train and explore orther Dutch cities as well. Enjoy your stay (and read our Groningen, Netherlands and Schiphol pages). PJ

I was there for a few days in december 97 and let me say it's a wonderful place...i think for people like us (i'm from Malaysia) it's so very different, even from the bigger cities in the netherlands. I don't know if you've been around the netherlands but in Groningen (if you learn to pronounce it the way the dutch do, you'll be doing better than all other tourists) english wasn't spoken as much as I thought, but the people go out of their way to help you.
some lovely little pubs and just sitting there i'd get people come up talking to me - mind you i was often mistaken for being a moroccan and once i said i'm from malaysia, they wouldn't know what to say next - no problems with thailand i think) Hey, if you ever go to a fruitshop, remember you can't just go pick up the veggies - you got to tell the shop attendant what you want, I almost brought some teenage shop attendant to tears by just walking in and picking up whatever i wanted....

i live real close to groningen and if you got specific questions, i might be able to help you.
perhaps we could meet one day. groningen in january can be cold and wet or cold and frosty. it has a nice sized city heart where all can be done on foot if needed. a bicycle is better however. almost every day there s a market on the market squares. because it s a university town, there s lots of pubs to choose from and there s good choice in restaurants. hope you like our town! *am pretty sure you will* greets! roelien
