Mechelen Travel Forum

Hi!
I came in Mechelen on September 12th 2004, when all the people were celebrating the 500 years of this wonderful town...It was very very nice, and I will always remember that beautiful day, but unfortunately I' ve lost all the pictures I took during my short travel in Belgium! Now I'm looking for pictures about this celebration in Mechelen...can someone help me??

Hello Primula,

Just wondering how I can help you I looked om Googles if there is anything about the festival, but ... I cannot find anything. Second, I know that beautiful Mechelen is much, much older then 500 years, so I am just asking ... was it a jubilee or a completely different festival that took place in September.

Well, I think Mechelen was built in the X century or something like this...but I know it was the capital of Belgium for some time(could it be 500 years ago?)! I don't really know what kind of festival it was, I remembered the town full of carriages and people wearing kind or renaissance costumes and I will be very glad to know more about it and the history of this city...I had only few hours to visit it but I was really struck by its churches and streets, by its bells anb by its coloured houses... Hope to see it again soon, at least thanx to some pictures! :-) Do you know if there's some Mechelen Tourism Angency to ask for them? Thanx again!

12th september was 'open monumentendag'. Open monuments day. The theme this year was conected with nature. :-)

I did see a glimps of a parade at that day...but I visited some other things that where not accessible otherwise. So I don't have those pictures.

I do have pictures of the 'Hanswijkprocessie'. An event with a lot of historical costumes etc.

Mechelen is worth a visit. I'm glad you discovered it.
(Belgium is only Belgium since 1830. ;-))

Thank you very much for your advice! You're right, Mechelen is really worth a visit and I hope to see it again soon, and not only for a couple of hours this time!
I didn't know I could visit some monuments that were usually closed...what a pity! I only managed to see the wonderful cathedral...and I will be very glad if you could send me some othetr pictures of this town...no matter if they are not taken on 12th september!
