| Durban | Transport in Durban Posted: Sun October 24, 2004 09:36 AM UTC
Hi,
We are planning for a short visit to Durban over the Xmas break. But I want to find out how easy/difficult it is to get around in Durban. What kind of transportation is availble within the town? Is it fairly affordable and easy to use? Is it safe? Is it possible to cover the major attractions with this transport? Thanks |

It depends on where you stay.
If you are close to the beachfront you will be in reach of the aquarium, mini-town, the beach, a lot of restaurants and shopping areas. There are busses and taxi's. Taxi's are quite expensive. Avoid the minibus taxi's. Their driving is not always that safe.

The most popular mode of public transport is the Mynah Bus.
There are 84 Mynah Buses which are controlled by the Department of Durban Transport. They operate to and from South Beach, North Beach, Albert Park, Market, Morningside, Berea, Tollgate, Musgrave, Mitchelles Park, Botanic Gardens, Ridge and Vause Road. Timetables are free and can be obtained from Pine Street bus terminal, opposite the Workshop Shopping Mall and the Metro Information Centre, Shop 12 Old Mutual Arcade, 303 West Street, Durban Phone: +27-31-309 5942 The above copied from from the VT page on Durban transport.

Yes, the Mynah busses are everywhere, and can be taken from most populated areas in Durban. I also agree that you should avoid the "mini busses"--those guys drive like nuts and they have a well-deserved reputation of being dangerous.
You could also rent a car, as long as you're very careful about where you park it (ie: daytime, near crowds, possibly with a "watcher" keeping an eye on it for a couple of bucks). We did this all over SA with no problems. Hope this helps.
