Does anyone know if there is a reasonable bus service fromKambos to any other part of Island , say to Pythagorian or Vathi

Most greek islands have bus service. The key question you asked is reliable. If you are flexible with your time, and budget that time, you should be able to see anyplace on any island via bus. Have fun!

did not notice a bus service when we where there in july but we found the taxi`s cheap enough or if you feeling abit more daring car hire was also fairly cheap

No. There is a service to Karlovasi very early in the morning (between 7 and 7.30). The bus does go on to Vathy but there is no time to stay there before it sets off back again. It then returns from Karlovasi to Kambos/Votsalakia at 12.30-ish. It also goes in the other direction to Drakei.
