Santiago:Cost of accommodation,etc.

I need some information about the cost of living in Santiago. I know there are a lot of friendly Chileans out there that might be able to help. My family (wife and two small children) and I are thinking of moving to Santiago for at least three years to come and teach there. What I would like to know is how much we will pay for a house - not too fancy, but OK for living in, in a neighbourhood that isn't too noisy but also not too far away from the city. What is the cost of living in general. Can you please tell me in US$ if possible. Any information will be appreciated.

You'll pay directly in pesos chilenos over there. Still, there is no major problem for the change. Cheers

Hi,

well, I do not know a lot about house prices near the center, but I do know some nice Chilean who might be able to help you. However, I friend of mine rented an appartment in Las Condes for 200 USD. The apparment was rather small (2 very small rooms, kitchen, bathroom - all fully equipted).

however, if you would like to contact my friend Boris directly you may visit his website at www.maschile.cl. When contacting him, please tell him hello from Karsten. Boris knows a whole bunch of people there. I lived for 4 months with his family.

don't hesitate to contact me for further questions.
Regards, Karsten.

Hi!
An average middle class neighborhood house can be around or more than Ch$200.000 pesos (aprox: US$300) in places such as Ñuñoa, La Florida, Macul (middle class areas) Provedencia and Las Condes are good areas as well, but prices rise much higher here.
Schools can be rather expensive, around US$150 per child education (can be up to $200 if you want bilingual schools); I recommend this more than public schools.
Santiago is more expensive than any other city in Chile, but then here is where you will find more job opportunities.
I hope this info is useful.
WELCOME TO CHILE!

You may think in about US$ 450 for a small house or apropiated apartment in a medium class neighborhood, US$ 270 per kid in a private school, public schools are deficient and hard to get in, food & other expenses at least US$ 350. All amounts are monthly.
You can save if you locate in other cities but job oportunities are lesser, I encourage you to start right now searching for a job, what do you want to learn ?
