| Puerto Montt | Navimag boat from P. Montt to Ponte Natales Posted: Tue October 19, 2004 12:33 AM UTC
Hello All,
My husband and I are considering taking the 3night/ 4 day Navimag ferry from Puerto Montt to Ponte Natales and were wondering if anyone had done it and if so, what were your experiences? We have heard somewhat mixed reviews but it makes sense in terms of covering a long distance and getting to see something other than a bus window. Postive and negatives welcome. Thanks so much. |

i just came back from that trip...the other direction though...puerto natales to puerto montt. and since it was the off season, we got the no-frills boat (the m/v puerto eden). not that the normal boat is any more luxurious. anyway, it was an amazing trip. i mean really something out of the ordinary. spectacular scenery! definitely the highlight of the entire south american trip. but it is very slow moving...so bring a few good books...or several bottles of wine ;-) the little stretch of the golfo de pena in the open seas does get a little uncomfortable and is best dealt with by sleeping through it, but the rest is just simply amazing! i got some pics, but have been too lazy to post em...maybe i should get to it soon.

I really enjoyed it, even if we only had 1 day and a half of splendid weather (it was raining during the rest of the trip). Even through the rain and sometimes the mist, you could guess the enormous shapes of the chilean fjords. It was of course a lot better with a blue sky. And, as you perfectly said it, it gives you another point of view than the usual bus window's one...
The man is right : take one or two good books : even if you have one documentary and one movie per day, it sometimes gets a bit long.... Cheers and enjoy your trip !

Last December and January I did this same trip on a private yacht after crossing the Pacific from New Zealand to Puerto Montt. After Purto Natales we continued on to Terra del Fuego and the Horn. I have been sailing for over 25 years as my proffesion and live in Maine but must admit this is some of the most striking and beautiful scenery I have ever encountered. It really is not to be missed if you have the opportunity. That said it can and will be cold, possibly wet and overcast, and no fancy hotels at either end. If you are even a little bit adventurous do not let this deter you. We saw the ferry a few times but obviously I cannot comment on what it has to offer. I would highly reccommend going to Ushuaia also while you are in this area. Good luck.
