| Manhattan Island | Car Rental Posted: Sat October 16, 2004 05:59 PM UTC
Hi,
I be in NYC next week and staying in E 70th area, think of getting a rental car for a day on Sunday to get out of town and may be do some sightseeing and shopping outside Manhattan. The rental rate is just too expansive, costing about US 80 - 110 for a 12 hrs rental. Anyone have any idea where can I get a lower and cheaper rental deal around the area. And I am interesed to get another car to go to Niagara Fall for the weekend, so can rented car be taken over to Canadian side of Niagara? Thanks for your response, Cheers. Regards |

Each car rental company has rules and regulations on crossing the car into Canada. Most do not allow you to leave the US with the car. So I would do some research on car rental companies. Niagara Falls is about a 6 to 8 hour drive from New York City and is approximately 400 miles or 640 Kilometers away.

In manhattan cars are very expensive because they are involved in so many thefts and collisions.
You can cut the price in half if you can find your way out to Newark Airport (EWR) to rent a car. The rules may say that you cannot take it into Manhattan. Not sure about Canada. Weekend rates are usually lower, but they require you to keep it over a Saturday night. A Sunday rental may be higher than Saturday at times.

At hertz.com I see cars available next Sunday from Newark airport for about $50 per day. I think this price includes taxes and insurances if you are a non-U.S. citizen.
This was using discount number 157348 which is US Airways frequent flier. You can sign up to be a US Airways member at usairways.com, no charge.

The Hertz website says that the vehicle cannot be driven into Mexico. Canada is okay. Not sure on the visa requirements for Canada depending on what country you are from.
Perhaps someone can help you with transportation available from 70th street to Newark airport.

Unless you plan to leave the island(nyc) you realy dont want a car. Niagara Fall is a 5 1/2 hr drive from NYwithout traffic.
Driving in NY is the worst, you will sit in traffic for hours on the same block................you will never find a parking spot. TRUST ME.......it will be more trouble then it is worth. Take a taxi................

try to go to newark airport and then rent a car from there. you could take a taxi out there, but then again that might wipe out any savings in renting a car from outside nyc. i'd recommend taking a path train to newark and then a local newark bus to the airport (total should be about $2.80...$1.50 on the path and $1.30 on the local bus). once you're at the airport, shuttle busses will take you to the car rental places. but you really don't want the hassle of having a car if you're not going out of town. having a car here is a real pain...i actually have to leave here in a few mins to go move mine to the other side of the street (street cleaning tomorrow morning) of course, it'll probably take me at least half an hour to find a parking spot on the street!
