Drinking/ ID Posted: Mon January 20, 2003 07:22 PM UTC
Hello I know that in New York you have to be over 21 to drink alcohol but what are they like for IDing people. I'm 27, which is probably making you wonder what I'm worried about but i was ided for cigarettes last year! Should I take my passport out with me to be on the safe side or would U.S bars accept a UK proof of age card? Thanks in advance for any help

Bring your passport. I can't imagine that a NY bartender would know a UK proof of age card if he got hit in the head with one.

Julie is right. Also remember that your passport is your only “real” identification form when your travel outside your country.

You'll be alright in most bars - certainly in the Irish ones they won't ID you. However certain bars ID you, you'll need a drivers license/passport and it's unlikely they'll accept anything less.

Thanks eveyone. I'll just have to be extra careful when I'm out ( bit paranoid about losing my passport) On the same sort of lines, we want to go to a club that plays alternative music ( Strokes, White stripes etc) where do people suggest. Will be in Manhattan ( though expect you've assumed that!)

You could try the Knitting Factory (http://www.knittingfactory.com/ ), a club/concert venue in Soho. I don't expect you'll see The Strokes here but you might see some good up-and-coming indie/alternative bands.

uff - everyone said it... still they will ID you. last time in the USA I was 26 and got IDed all the time. For my boyfriend, 36 back then, it was the same story. And never mind that half the people in the bar looked underage anyway ;-)

I was asked for ID at the tender age of 37 so there really is no accounting for the way the regulations are enforced!

> I guess it is just that so many 18 year olds look like 40 already
Hm, I prefer to think that it's because so many 35-year-olds like myself are just as fresh-faced as we were at 18... :-)
I got carded a few months ago when I was out in Chicago with dlandt and his wife (she and I both got asked for ID, but he didn't--flattery for the ladies? or just a clueless doorman?)

I just come back from SF, I'm 26 and also got Id'd in most of the time... I find that a rather funny habits: some barmen see you are from a foreign country and start chatting with you, some other were so confused with the different pages of my passport, that they really appreciate when I end up showing my belgian ID (a plastic card) ;-))

they'll actually actept any kind of picture ID. I never carry my passport around, neither ever bothered to get a NY state ID. I always show my portuguese ID card (which in fact expired a couple of years ago). but except for some irish bars, almost everywhere, you may be 40, look 50, but with no ID, no deal.

by the way, a photocopy of your passport will work just fine. no need to carry the actual passport around

Old Cliffie has visited scores of bars in New York over the years and has yet to see anyone asked for ID. Of course, it may have something to with the type of bar he frequents. Even when he went out regularly one summer with an 18-year-old Bulgarian friend, she was never once asked for ID in the several bars we went to.
