Trier staying in trier
Posted: Sun October 10, 2004 09:39 PM UTC
my wife and i are traveling to europe, (my first time) and we are going to visit region around trier germany for the first week and travel in a rental car to holland, luxembourg, bastonge, and nancy france. what will the weather be like in the middle of october, and are there any quaint areas that other travelers have found within an hour or so ride. although this is my first time in europe, my wife has been here a number of times, living in munich during the early 1960's.

Typical day temperatures are around 15 °C. (But a few days ago they were in 10 degrees higher). Mostlikely a mix of sun and rain.

This region is generally a quaint area.

Interesting is the Sauer valley (border Luxembourg/Germany) e.g. around Echternach

the Mosel valley
e.g. Bernkastel

Burg Eltz

Hunsrück
Idar Oberstein, medieval copper mine in Fischbach

Eifel
Vulcanic lakes (Maare) e.g. near Daun

Nancy is approx 1,5 hours; Maastricht approx 1,75 hours by car.

Trier is a very good city (check out my page for some info!) and Aachen is also great. Since you wife can speak german it will really help out in getting around. Luxembourg City is very good for a few days (official language is French, but everyone speaks german), and in the Netherlands I can reccomend Maastricht, Rotterdam, Den Haag, and Groningen (if you want to drive that far north). I dont know much about France so cant give any good recomendations......

As far as renting a car, be sure to get an official translation before you travel, as the law in germany states that you must have a translation of all non-EU licenses into german. I assume France and Netherlands have similar laws but I am not sure.
