Turkmenistan 5 day transit visa for Turkmenistan
Posted: Sat October 9, 2004 12:07 PM UTC
I'm hoping to travel from Uzbekistan across Turkmenistan, to take teh ferry accross the Caspian Sea to Azerbyjan.
Any advise on getting a 5 day transit visa for Turkmenistan. Can I just do this in Tashkent or at the border?

To answer my own question, the Consulate in Almaty is an idiot and wouldn't give me the transit visa, claiming it doesn't exist.
HOWEVER, It's easy and cheap to get in Tashkent, Uzbekistan though I think there was a 10 day waiting period. I found this out from other travellers and the current lonely planet.
I, however, ended up going back to Kazakhstan (exiting from the west of Uzbekistan) and getting a ferry across to Baku from there. The ferry leaves about every week or so, and not on a schedule. Email me for more info if interested.

SO then is it impossible to get a transit visa for Turkmenistan even in Tashkent? I'm living in Almaty right now and am also looking at taking the train from Uzbekistan across Turkmenistan and then the boat across the Caspian. Is that impossible on a transit visa? What city did you go from in Uzbekistan?

I heard from other travellers and read in the new LP that you can quite easily get a 5 day transit visa in Tashkent which will give you enough time to haul ass across Turkmenistan and get the ferry to Baku.

I really hope thats true as I have been fretting about the Turkmen visa, it seems the hardest to get in central asia.
What do you need to get the transit visa? book the ferry and bring them a ticket?
For me it is the time it takes the get the visa which is the problem anything more than 5 days is hard, especially considering they will have your passport in that time.

How was the ferry ride, I am thinking of doing it this summer?

for me the turkmen visa was the easiest in ca. I made it in wien, austria. They just asked, where to go after turkmenistan, and than they checked my iranian visa. I paid 30$ and get my passport back 3 days later. (posted back to me to hungary)
