Durban Travel Forum

Hi there,
was wondering if anyone could help to fill in my itinerary. I'm travelling to Los Angeles,on to Oz and then finally South Africa. I will be in durban between 25th Dec and 30th Dec 2004. I have tickets for the test match at that time but require digs (not too expensive). What are the average costs and are there any special events coming up, best sights to see, best boozers, etc.
Any info would be appreciated

Hotel I recommend is the Riverside Hotel... just up the road from the stadium.
Also try www.durban.gov.za

What I would suggest is to google 'barmyarmy' and click on their web site. You'll get all you want to now and much more. Especially boozers. I know they have arranged a big Xmas do in Durban.

I am trying to make it to the Cape Town test. Not sure if I can at present.

I actually contacted the barmy army website a few months ago when I first had the idea of going to the cape Town and durban tests. They wanted @ £1600 for flights hotels and tickets.
i thought that was a little expensive.
Since then, things have rapidly moved on in my life, I'm changing jobs after 16.5 years and have managed to get a month inbetween.
Had 3 firms fighting for my money and eventually got the flights from Manchester to LA (via Heathrow), LA to Melbourne, Melbourne to Jo'burg (via Perth), Jo'burg to Durban then return home flights via jo'bug and Heathrow arriving back New Years Eve morning.
The price was £1338 including @£200 airport taxes, £16 Oz visa, £18 Jo'burg digs 1 night and other bits & bobs.
The Firm is STA travel of Manchester, contact being Oscar Thompson on 0161 834 0668.

I've since contacted the Barmy Army and paid for the Durban 5 day ticket (£40 the lot)
Their cheapest digs are £37 (double room only), but they do pair up singles and odd numbers to halve the cost. So i'll probably book with them at £18/night for 4 nights. My journey home starts on the 30th so I hope we've skittled them all out after 4 days
You really ought to give them a bell at STA.

Thanks for all that. I had heard of STA but was not sure if they organised trips to the SA tests.

If I go it will be the Cape Town test. I have a ticket but it is for the 'grassed area'. I love Cape Town -- have been ther a few times.
