Europe via cruise..
Posted: Wed October 6, 2004 06:08 PM UTC
My husband and I are planning a trip to Europe next summer.

Just wondering if anyone has any experiences taking a mederrainian cruise. The cruise we are looking at would be from Barcelona, and have 2 stops France (Nice and Marseille), and 3 stops in Italy (Florence, Rome and Naples).

Besides that we would most likely stay in Barcelona for a few days and maybe even do some short tour out of there if something good comes up.

What do you think of this option for a first time visit to Europe?

Cruises from Barcelona to Naples are the most popular Mediterranean cruises available. It is a good way to begin to see Europe.

You should be careful deciding what ship will suit you best. They are all different and offer many different environments.

I would be happy to assist you in any way that I can. I have sailed in Europe aboard Princess Lines, Holland America Lines, and Royal Caribbean among others.

Check out my home page for links to the various ships.

Yes Joan is our cruise expert on VT! :)))

I just think that you don't get to meet many Europeans on a cruise ship. Or at least not a good mix of them - you'd just meet other cruising people and then see the sights in the ports of call...I prefer to sit on trains, chatting to locals on their way to work etc. to learn about daily life in the country. But that's me. :)

That depends on which line, which ship, and where you are cruising. We have made many European friends on our cruises.

Yes I'm sure you have :) That's why I added "or at least not a good mix". I like to see the less fortunate sides of places I go to as well. Not that I want to end up in the worst slum of New York or Calcutta - I just want to see a mix of society if you see what I mean? :)

But I gues you get to SEE a lot of Europe like this and Joan, it's interesting to hear that there seem to be such a difference in "attitude" between the companies then!?

By the way, the founder of the UK budget airline EasyJet now wants to start an EasyCruise. For people who want to cruise but can't afford it, he wants to sell flexible packages where you can pay for your cabin for just a night, add meals on board yoursel and so on...it will be interesting to see how it will develop. No ports decided yet but it will be either Spain/France or France/Italy.
