My advice is go. Lots of accommodation from cheapo to 5 star hotels. Nusa Dua no problem, but possibly more nightlife Kuta area.
Go anytime to suit yourself, travel round the island can be cheap, & the people are some of the friendliest in the world.

Both Nusa Dua AND Ubud. I loved Ubud, the most peaceful serene place ever, I could have spent a month there. It just has a very calm feel about it and its a great place to see the island from, lots of dances etc in the evenings.
Now to complicate matters I think you really should include Lombok in your plans.
We went in January which is the wettest time but the rain didn't bother us it was nice to have a big downfall in the afetrnoon, sitting on the patio reading and then it would clear up and we went out at night which was nice and cool (well cool for Bali) after the rain.

There are a lot of cheap hotels in Kuta area & Lovina beach. You can check on http://www.balihotelguide.com

Good on you. Cheap accommodation can be found in Ubud and Kuta, which are the biggest tourist areas. Bali Breeze Bungalows is a nice backpacker choice on the south side of Ubud, though I haven't been there for nine years!! Nusa Dua is anything but cheap.
December is in the rainy season. I wouldn't go then, but I'm sure others will say it's okay.
Whatever the weather, enjoy your holiday. I just came back from an 8 day break.... it was wonderful! Wish I could have stayed longer!

I agree 100% with leftnotracks. We spent two days in Kuta and ran for the hills (literally) and spent the rest of our time in Ubud. We also went to Giili Trawangan and it is fantastic, well worth the trip to get there.

I concur that Nusa Dua not for the budget minded. Overall, Bali is cheap. 12 days food and water cost us only $150 each. But in Nusa Dua would be more expensive. Kuta is okay, but very party oriented if you're into that. Ubud would be exact opposite. Not hard to do day trips to either no matter where you stay. We were in Sanur which was good blend of having quiet + things to do. Tours are so easy to arrange, you can really see any area you wish to in a day. Taxis hire for the day for cheap ($10-20 for the day). Steak dinners and pizzas in Sanur were never over $4. Cold drinks however, were also about $4. Note that Ubud is not on the ocean, so if you enjoy beach and ocean activities you won't be doing them in Ubud.

P.S. Nusa Dua is the wall-to-wall resort area, not a lot of culture, can be hard getting to other places....a Cancun type place.

You will have a wonderful time there. I agree with the others who have warned you off Nusa Dua. It is very much a gated community down there. You could be in any resort in the world. For beach, try Kuta (party zone) or Seminyak (nearby but quieter). Some people hate the overcommercialisation of Kuta but you have to admire the energy and entrepeneurial spirit of the place. Ubud is a must. I spent a month there a few years ago. Most people fall in love with it - great people, great food and hassle free. For waterfalls you could try getting up to the north coast - there are a few close to Lovina (worth staying 2 days there) as well as a great hot springs. I can't make any recommendations about wildlife I'm afraid. Enjoy your time in Bali. It is a very special place. Cheers.

As others have replied Nusa Dua is not really for those on a budget. Ubud is lovely and there are lots of budget places to stay. I wouldn't rule out a few days in Legian/Kuta area for the nightlife and beach, each t their own but it's always nice to see both sides. A great accommodation site with reviews is http://micbali.proboards21.com/index.cgi

Have fun ;-)

I agree with all of the above. And wanted to add that when i went on my first trip to Bali I got tons of tips and great info on the Bali Travel Forum. Tips on places to stay, how to change money without getting ripped off, the best ATMs, the best restaraunts. it's a wonderful resource. By the time I arrived I was armed with some great info, and even met up with some fellow travelers.

You will love Bali. i'm so glad you are going!

why not stay in Kuta and then move to Ubud ? that way you get the best of both loud and serene, ugly and beautiful , people and trees ....you dont have to stick to one hotel !

Bali is safe and when I was there early this year and tourist are coming back . Perhaps you wanna skip places like Hardrock cafe . Go to the local cafe and stalls and it would be safe I guess.

Dont worry too much , everything is destined ....there is a Thai saying that goes like this , " if its your time , even a toothpick can send you to heaven ".

When I was there my mum was so scared of the bombings and coincidentally there was a tremor just a week or so before our trip. Imagine ! But we managed to calm her and she really enjoyed her trip very much !
