Democratic Republic of Congo HELP
Posted: Mon October 4, 2004 05:48 PM UTC
I am a student at Northridge Highschool in Greeley Colorado. My teacher has assigned our class a project to go to another country for 30 days. I chose Democratic Republic of Congo. Could people please give me info about where to stay for cheap, places to visit, places to eat, and packing tips. We only can spend 8000 dollars. PLEASE HELP!

My recommendations are to take your USD 8000 and choose another country. The DRC is war torn and Kinshasa the capital one of the most unsafest cities on the continent of Africa. My last visit to that country on business we had to flee across the Congo River to Brazzaville because it became to unsafe... Hence it is no place to visit - and certainly not for a High School Student!!!!

Hm, if you chose DRC, perhaps you should go back and take Geopolitics 101 all over again.

I am greatly attached to DRC and there are some pretty amazing things here, but I could not agree more with the other comments - its a difficult country to arrive in all by yourself, and its really unstable, going through a fragile process right now. Kinshasa is not the most dangerous city in Africa though, Nairobi is much more dangerous on a daily basis, the danger here is that the political situation is pretty explosive - in the past ten months there have been two attempted coups. So, don't come here, you'll be likely to run into serious trouble at some point. On the other hand, Id be interested to know why you chose DRC? So few people are interested nowaways.

I am so fanscinated by this country. It is literally a secret to the outside world since it is so dangerous to travel in. This country should be rich and prosperous with the diamonds and the gold, however it is a human rights nightmare.

How is the disarming of all the rebel groups coming along? It will be a great day when tourists can come back to this country. It is a huge country too, 1/4 size of the US yet nobody has hardly traveled there. I bet the rainforests are just amazing.

It seems that the situation has improved in DRC and Kinshasa especially in the two years since this was first posted. Yes?
