St. Peters - view from the dome
Posted: Sun October 3, 2004 04:45 PM UTC
Hi, I'm travelling to Rome this month with my elderly parents who wish to see the view of Piazza San Pietro from the dome. Is there a view of the statues and piazza from the roof where the lift takes you as they would not manage the stairs. Any other tips for the 'less mobile' would be appreciated.

Hi !
The first part is accesable by lift and you get to the (almost) flat top of the church and there you have
a toilet, a souvenir-shop and you may walk to the sculptures of the 12 apostels.
I am not sure anymore, if you would be able to see the square from that point, but you may walk at least almost (5 meters) to the sculptures.
Then you may enter the dome / cuppola and I am quite sure, that the very first part should be possible for elderly people as well and you may look down into the church and see the ornaments of the cupola from short distance.
The top of the dome is impossible for elderly and heavy people.
good luck !
Michael

I just had another look at the pictures I took from the first platform: the areal view from there is not as spectacular as from the very top, but I would think that it is very worthwhile anyway! And as Michael already suggested: the view down into the cathedral is stunning as well!

Do have a look at my general tips on my Rome page - there are a couple of tips that might be helpful to you! And even if your parents don't need a wheelchair, the website stated there might still be helpful to you!

Enjoy your visit!

I didn't try to climb to the domes of any cathedrals, but
I went to Italy two years ago in a wheelchair, ( I can walk about a block or two before I begin to have severe muscle pains.) My daughter went with me. I was delighted that all the cities we visited, including Rome, had wheelchair ramps onto and off of sidewalks. Also, there were very few stairs anywhere. Some of the brick & cobblestone streets were bumpy in some areas, but I had taken a thick cushion for my chair & it was no problem. A few times I walked for a few yards.

We also rode the buses by just folding the chair and I stepped onto the bus. By having the wheelchair, we were
able to be on the go sightseeing about 10 hours a day. It was great.

To see a great nighttime photo from St. Peters Dome, see my Intro page on Rome. I can't take credit for taking it, but the nighttime view is spectacular.
