| Torrevieja | Advice on Moving to Torrevieja Posted: Sun October 3, 2004 01:51 PM UTC
Me and my boyfriend are moving to Torrevieja in November can anyone tell me the following...
Are we aloud to work out there, how do we get permits. Can we just move out there or are we only allowed to stay for so long? Do we need some kind of insurance? Any advice would be much appreciated Thank you Donna |

Hi!
Are you British citizens? If you are, you don't need a work permit or any other paperwork in order to work and live in Spain, just as I being Spanish don't need any special paperwork or anything to live and work in the UK as I have been doing for several years. That is the European Union for ya! You will only have to register with the Police, which will be done when you request your NIE or identification number. Yes, unlike in the UK, here we do have ID cards. Everybody, not only foreigners. You have to register as a resident if you plan to stay for a long time. It is just so that your Embassy knows you are there. You can ask where to register when you get your NIE. Get a Form 111 from the Social Security Department to cover your urgent medical expenses. It seems that residents don't need the Form 111 any more, but it doesn't harm to carry one just in case. Your travel insurance will cover you for the first two or three months, after that, if you have a job and are paying Spanish Social Security contributions you will be entitled to receive medical care from the Spanish equivalent of the NHS. Just the ONE piece of advise: please learn Spanish. It would make the move easier. if you are already fluente in Spainsh, please learn Valencian, that would make it MUCH easier. Good luck! Susana

Hey...
I lived in Torrevieja from last june to september. I had a wonderful time and am so jealous of you going over there! Anyway, i worked in a bar while i was there. I didnt need a work permit for that bar, but when i first was searching for a job some places did require you to have one!? Anyway, if this happens to you, you are allowed to start working there immediately. You can apply for the permit in nearby Alicante after you have started working. You must get the E111. If you have to go to a hospital or emergency room bring it ALONG WITH YOUR PASSPORT. Also, the E111 is a great thing to have cause its valid for ten years and can be used in all or most EU countries. You're allowed to stay for ages before you have to worry about the "residencia" so dont worry about that til you get over there. One thing: make sure you have some way of showing that you are paying tax once you start working, this is the one thing the guardia do check for!. Regarding what the other lady said about learning spanish: dont worry. Once you start working you will pick up what you need. Also, I found that a lot of Spanish people are only pretending that they dont speak english. However, I have to say that they are not so nice to non - spanish speakers. At the beginning of my time there i had very little spanish. By the end I had alot because I had to learn it. People can be hostile towards non-natives, spanish helps...thats just my experience! Best of luck...enjoy!
