Big Bend National Park Big Bend or Bust!!!

Well about four bikes and one truck/trailer will be caravaning from Austin, TX to Big Bend this November 3rd - 7th. We're hoping to get there and get a spot at the Rio Grande Village camping grounds. None of us have been there and was wondering if anyone can give us tips and advice to make the trip memorable. Any idea would be great. Thanks.

Went to Big Bend many years ago and it still ranks as one of the most memorable visits. The landscape is, as they say, awesome and very varied. Wonderful light. There is a wonderful (and quite easy) walk from the main guest house to "the window" that gives you a fabulous view through a gap in the mountains through to the plains laid out below. Try and get there just before sunset. Fabulous!!
There's lots of wildlife, especially the wild pigs. We were there in November/December. Lovely and sunny during the day but it gets chilly at night. The drive up from Austin (we drove from San Antonio) is also terrific. Stop off at Judge Roy Bean's house. The rangers at the main entrance to the Park are a mine of information, so take some time there when you stop to register. Enjoy!

More importantly, decide what exactly you're hoping to experience while at Big Bend (cameraderie? solitude? deserts? mountains? rafting? hiking? car tours?). That way you can know what to ask about. Then buy a book and find out, from someone who knows enough about the place to write a book about it, where you might find what you're looking for. If you're not certain if the advice in the book is correct (or just want to be reassured that it is), then ask here if the suggestions from the book are accurate.

Otherwise, the people here are just guessing on what you are looking for, and may well give advice that will be of no use to you whatsoever.
