Never been before so forgive my ignorance but can anyone tell me:
Is 3 days enough to visit everywhere ?
Best time of year to visit
Where should I visit ?
Is it expensive ?
How safe a city is it ?
Best way to travel from airport to centre
Any suggertions for reasonable hotel in the centre

Thanks

It's been about 6 years since I went to Budapest. It was a very nice city. See the chain bridge, opera house, danube river tour, any good guide book can show you around.

Are they using the Euro yet? Well whatever there currency was when I was there, it had a great exchange with the dollar so things were very affordable.

I stayed at a swiss/radisson hotel in the city center.

3 days isnt ample time but if its what you have then you can see quite a bit IF you research well and do some planning. You can see some great bridges...seeing the Danube alone is worth the trip.

Budapest is a safe, moderately expensive travel destination. The best reccomendadtions I usually get are on LonelyPlanets' Thorn tree online...but the Lonely Planet Budapest guidebook is A+ and pays for itself with good hotel reccomentations and info.

3 days in Budapest was enough for me, but I still missed out places that I had wanted to see.

Be sure to spend the day up in Buda, visit the palace, fishermans bastion, chill out in the main square up there, visit Gellert hill and sit and enjoy the amazing views from up there.

Make sure that you dont miss the Museum Of Terror on Andrassy, visit St Stephens Basillica.

I found Budapest safe and diddnt have any concerns at all, as for expensive, well that depends on what you mean by expensive!! We were backpacking and found it more expensive than other Eastern European countries, a friend went a little while after us and stayed in a 5star hotel and thought it was so cheap!!

Fyi....Hungary are still using the forint.

Enjoy your trip in Budapest!

Kentishgirl has it right.

On balance Budapest is pleasantly moderate in expense...not at all as expensive as say Vienna.

A place like Buda(or Pest LOL) is pleasant to just walk around in...St Stephens is a must see...and a visit to the baths(many choices) is also unforgetable.

Further to the previous answers.

Best time of year - I like autumn , not many tourists ,city seems moodier .
Give the indoor and outdoor baths a go , statue parks interesting as well.
Its pretty safe unless you're a complete idiot.

Agreed. I have to say fall is the best time for Europe in general. The tourists are mostly gone and the weather cool-ish. Makes for a pleasant romp around a great world capitol.

3 days...enough to see a lot, but not everything. However it can give you a great insight :)

Best time of the year - autumn is calm, but summer is the one packed with programs, festivals, etc. If you want to see the sights only, early autumn and spring might be the best choice.

What to see? Lots! Check back to my Budapest Travel Pages before you come! :)

Budapest is not expensive in regard to other European cities and is not more dangerous either. Like in every big city in the world, you have to be carful, watch your bag, but that's it.

From the airport the easiest way (apart from a cab) is the "Airport Minibus" service whick takes you to any point of the city for a fixed sum.

As far as a Hotel...I don't know. Marco Polo Hostel is told to be good though.

3 days is about enough to get the general feel of the city, but there is no way that it will be enough time to truly SEE the city. You will have to pick and choose which things you want to see and do. There is so much ambiance there that you can just walk around for hours and be content with a days worth of sightseeing!

As for hotels, I found a GREAT place pretty much in the middle of everything. It was only about $45-50 USD per night. Check out my Budapest page for more info about the place. Here is a link to the place I stayed:

Good luck and enjoy your stay in Budapest!
