Hotel Ben Hur or Best Western Vision?
Posted: Tue September 28, 2004 12:03 PM UTC
Hi everyone!

We'll will be in Korea 10/16-10/23 and staying in Seoul 10/16-10/19.

We're looking for a Western-style hotel for around $80 per night. So far, I've found Hotel Ben Hur and Best Wetern Vision. (Thanks jburro!) It looks like some of the other hotels in this price range have gotten some negative reviews (e.g., Hotel Itaewon). Considering convenience, location and value for the money, which hotel would you recommend? What other hotels should I consider? I'll be traveling w/ a girlfriend. Our itinerary for two full days in Seoul includes Itaewon, Insadong, one of the palaces, and the folk village. Then we're off to Soraksan and will be staying with family after that.

Also, I speak fluent Korean (although my mom wouldn't agree), so communication shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks!

-Terri

Hotel Itaewon sucks....I haven't read the reviews, but for the money, it sucks. Stay away from the Clover too. You can do better at the Hamilton, Crown or the Capitol (maybe a little out of your price range) for the same price. I personnally prefer the Hamilton just because it is right in the middle of Itaewon and on top of a subway stop (easy for you to get to Insadong). The rooms are maybe the quality of a good Motel 6 or a bad Holiday Inn. It cost me $75 to stay there in May. The Capital's rooms are much nicer and the airport limo bus stops right at it's lobby, but you have to walk a bit to get to a subway stop. You may also try the Ramada Inn Seoul (5 star) out in the Kangnam area. It is not as centrally located like you might prefer, but it has awesome accomodations and they are always running internet specials. Right now, I think a room at the internet dicount rate out there is about 110,000 won ($85) right now. They were running a 80,000 won per room Chusok specail

I think the Ben Hur is out in Youido. It is nice, but in my opinion only convienent for getting to the airport and too far from the center of town. It is also a little more convienant to the folk village (which is actually in Suwon; not Seoul).

By the way, since I assume you are a kyopo, do you also read and write Korean? It would be helpful in a pinch, plus people from seoul tendd to tak kind of fast; like New Yorkers.

Hey olddude (Al?),

Thanks for the hotel info. I really appreciate it.
Yup, I'm a kyopo and read/write hangul. I hope it comes in handy :-)

Okay, just did some more research.

I think Hotel Crown Insadong sounds good and is within my price range. You're right, the Hamilton is a bit too pricey.

Is it easy to get there from the airport?

The Crown in Insadong is somewhat easy to get to. I think if you take the airport limousine bus #601 or 602, it will get you there. These buses run about $5 to get to your destination. A taxi would run you about $50. Not much goes to Insadong from the airport. The subway doesn't run out there yet.
I just checked the internet prices for your dates and you are right, the Hamilton is about $13 more a night during your time there. Normally it would only be a dollar more. There must be a special event in the area. They always raise their prices for US military exercises and holidays because the Hamilton is so close and convienant to everything.
