| Isla de Roatán | ATM's and rental cars Posted: Fri September 24, 2004 12:55 PM UTC
We are going to Roatan soon and are worried about access to cash and renting a car. I understand there are only two ATM's on the island. Suggestions??? We will carry some cash. Also, suggestions for renting a car for a couple of days here and there? or would you suggest using local transportation?

Atm's are few and not always working. Some places take travelers checks but I personally just bring cash. I bring only smaller bills $10-$20's and keep it in two different places. Some stashed in a deep pocket, or locked at my home there, and another pocket with spending cash never more than about $100 at a time, so no one see's a large wad of money. Crime is minimal but it is still a very poor country and you should use common sense, treat people well, tip well, but try not to be a flashy gringo. Remember compared to most on Roatan, they are correct when they think all travelers are wealthy. Use common sense.
There are a few local rentals available with P/U, smaller suv's and some small cars. I reccomend truck or SUV. We always book from AVIS international online and almost always request the smallest cheapest car but seeing they only have a couple cars they end up giving us a 4 door pickup, or Suv. Good luck. Where will you be staying? Also feel free to mail me if I can be of any help. Eric My email is "RoatanBlueHouse@aol.com"

Eric has done a very good job of answering you in this post.
We too do the AVIS booking and it has always worked out for us. We tend to also bring cash in small notes and a few travelers checks to cover any other things we need where a large amount is needed. For hotels and the car rental we use credit cards. If you need info on places to see while on Roatan I have a few places listed on my Isle de Roatan pages. If I too can be of help you can contact me at kan702@adelphia.net or throught my pages here. Most of all enjoy yourself and respect all. Keith

Not to play devil's advocate to the rental of a car... but taxis are also very inexpensive in the town, and you can find that most taxi drivers will take you where you want to go, and sit and wait for you multiple hours for about $10 a day. Not sure if this is in your budget, but it was great for us!
