Family of 4 going to Starfish Trewlany. Kids 15 & 9. Thinking about the luminous lagoon.. should I book through the hotel or some other way.(Is it worth the money?) Also we're staying in a cottage.. anyone know anything about them? how about the snorkeling and beaches are they any good? Thanks.

I'd recommend going through a travel agent. They're free of charge and you can easily find specialists in the destination you're looking for. Write to me for a recommendation for a good family travel specialist: ekeith@cinci.rr.com
I'd go ahead and give you more info here, but I don't know if that's allowed since it's a "commercial" type posting.

i second the suggestion of booking with a local... you and your familiy will be safe going with one of the cab drivers (licenced) they'll take you anywhere and you will probably have a much better time than going with your hotel. i've never done the luminous lagoon (i think the locals know it as "glistening waters"), but have always wanted to. one thing to keep in mind is i hear it makes a HUGE difference if there is a full moon or if there is no moon... it's one or the other, but i can't remember which is better. i would check that out if i were you before deciding to go.
have a wonderful trip, i wish i was going back to JA soon.

i am visitng starfish resort november 12-15th 2004 with two childrfem both boys ages 16 and 11yrs.
what are your dates of travel? last year we visited jamaica and stayed at sunset beach resort. we booked all of our tours through the hotel and they were great. we went to lumious lagoon and it was fantastic. you go at night, to see the water glowing. they say there are only three places in the world where this natural phenomonen occurs. we took a bus to the lagoon and boarded a very small boat. you get to the middle of the lagoon and as you are going out you can see the trail of the wake of the motor and the water glowing. ' then you have to jump in the water. where water shoes. it is murky and muddy at the bottom. it is where the fresh water and salt water meet. while in the water it seems like you glow. the phosphorus in the water looks like something from outer space. the kids loved it. they were shocked and thought that they added something to the water. as anything in jamaica, the bus ride is about 40 minutes. you are welcomed with drinks at the dock. Bring towels and wear your baithing suit or older clothes. you must jump into the water to get the full effect. the water is warm, but you will want a towel when you get out. travel light as the boat is small. you can watch others from the boat, but its not the same as being in the water and looking at your arms and body glowing. it is hard to describe, becasue i have never seen anything like it. its like special effects in a movie, but its all natural.
