Chiang Mai is considered Malaria free. Protect yourself anyway against being bitten with a repellent.
Also if you do not stay in a high risc area in Thailand you also do not need to take malaria tablets as a prophylaxis, but you can take some with you in case you get fever.
But as I said, no problem if you stay in Chiang Mai.

The maleria tablets were a big issue when i went last summer. After talking to a lot of doctors, plus the health dept, they said that chiang mai, chaing rai, and bankok are maleria free. Taking the tablets have some bad side affects as well, so you may want to ask about that. if you are really concerned do what we did and bring bug repellent, also a special kind of candle (scent free) that repels bugs in your hotel room.

**I did have to take around 4 other shots that the public health dept advised, so you might want to check that out. hope i was of any help.
