Is it true that there is a festival celebrated each year around June called the "Battle of the Wine" in the La Riojo region? Can anybody provide details for the 2005 season -- location, time, suggested hotels?

Hahahaha! Thank you for the tip. Sounds fun to me! I would keep my mouth wide open to try and catch as much ammunition as possible!
Haro town hall have a very informative website, including info on the festival, accommodation etc but only in Spanish. However you may be able to get one of those on-line translations, otherwise send me a line and I'll try and send you a brief. http://www.haro.org/turismo1.htm Salud!

Yes its quite true, its held in Haro as MissLondon states on the 29th of June. There are now a few festivals of this type in Spain, including a Battle of Tomatos and Water battles at various towns.

i know a talcum powder battle in La Palma island, in the carnivals :-D very funny indeed
we should do a recapitulation of all these strange battles here ...

Talcum powder!!! Maybe its worth steering clear of that one, I think they are now saying inhaling talcum powder can be carcinogenic.

Wine - Haro (Rioja) - 29th June Water - Langaron (Andalucia) - 24th June - Vallecas (Madrid) - 16th July - VillaGarcia (Galicia) 16th August Flowers - Laredo (Cantabria) - 27th August - Valencia (Valenciana) July - Murcia (Murcia) no date found. Tomato´s - Buñol (Valenciana) - 25th August Flour - Sinarcas (Valenciana) no date found. Talcum Powder - Ibi (Valenciana) 27th December There are also many festivals of Moors Versus Christianos, the most famous of which is in Valencia, but no food or drink is thrown. This years' Moors & Christians in Santa Pola (Alicante) included a "Beer Shower"... not a battle yet , but I'm sure it will develop into one soon.

To be added to the list of strange battles: meringue pastries (on thursday) and sweets (sunday) during Carnival at Vilanova i La Geltrú (Barcelona)
