On Zakynthos, september is the hatching period for the sea turtles. So you are almost surely not going to see a grown turtle.. they have made their nests and they are gone. During the night, the hatchlings leave the nest and make their way to the water. Sometimes they happen to leave the nest at dusk or just before dawn. I would strongly advise against going to the beach at night, as it is protected area. Our presence there is very dangerous for the hatchlings.. you could accidentally step on them and kill them, as they are very small in size. You might be lucky however, and just happen to see them on a cool afternoon. In that case, try to call for a volunteer from the Sea Turtle Society (they have a camp on Laganas and on Gerakas). Under no circumstances should you pick them up with your hands and put them in the water yourself, in an attempt to "help" them.
here is the link to the ARCHELON, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece website http://www.archelon.gr/

are you, Yianni, or are you just trying to tease me again? :-P well, if i remember correctly, an egg is a bit smaller than a table tennis ball, and a hatchling wouldn't be more than 6-7 cm from the nose to the tail.

In addition to what has already been said, here's another website with more info on the sea turtles: http://www.zanteguru.com/turtles/turtles.htm
