I never been there but always when visiting Germany I use the official city sites, in your case at:
www.karlsruhe.de Click on Stadt und Tourismus, you can change to English and find lots of useful information including hostels, bed and breakfast, maps etc.

I live near Karlsruhe and therefore I never spent a night in a hotel here.
I recommend you have a look at the following website: http://www.karlsruhe.de/Tourismus/ukv On the bottom of the page you can change the language into english. As far as I know there are no hotels directly near ZKM and the hotels near the train station seem to be not the cheapest. But ZKM can be easily reached by streetcar as the public transport system in Karlsruhe is excellent. So every accommodation in downtown Karlsruhe would be suitable. Bernd is right, Karlsruhe is not that big so You reach eveything by public transportation or walk. Take a look at http://www.karlsruhe.de/Tourismus/index.php?cmspa There You find cheap accos, also a Youth hostel is to find there. have fun in Karlsruhe and dont miss to step on the tower of the castle Gar
