hello I will be travelling to Lyon from Vienna via Zurich Most of the flights i have checked have around 1 hrs gap between connecting flights. Is this enough to go through customs, security and immigration at the zurich airport? or should i look for connecting flights with bigger gap? approx how much time customs, security and immigration takes if someone with schengen visa is travelling from vienna to lyon through zurich
You will not have to go through immigration as you're staying withing the Schengen area. You won't have to go through customs either, as you won't be leaving the airport. Should be OK, especially if both flights are with the same (or co-operating) airlines.

If your flight is booked as a 'through ticket' (i.e. with the same or co-operating airlines as mentioned above) then you can be reassured that even if your inbound flight is late and you miss your connection, steps must legally be taken to put you onto the next available flight and, in the meantime, pay for food, hotel etc if required. You won't have to pass through border control or customs as your flights are within Schengen. But you will have to collect your hold luggage if the bags are not 'checked through' as part of a 'through' ticket (you need to check this with the inbound airline) and this is why it matters. If you have booked two separate flights, so that you must collect your bag yourself, you may well find you do not have enough time to get to check-in for your onward flight (check-in usually closes 30 or 40 minutes before departure). So the answer is really this: if you are booking one ticket for both journeys...a 'through ticket'...you will have no major problems even if your inbound flight is delayed and you miss your outbound flight. But if you have booked two separate flights then I would suggest that an hour is not enough time to be sure of making the connection, and you should allow more. Remember also that landing time (touchdown) is not gate time. It can take quite a while to taxi to the gate and de-plane.
