layover in Zurich

by bradbeaman Online Now Apr 19, 2012 at 1:02 AM

Our family has a layover in Zurich landing 6:15 am and departing 12:45 pm, 6 and a half hours. Is there time enough to see or do anything? Does it take much time going through immigrations? Could I buy a train ticket out and then back?

Zürich airport is quite efficient, so you could just make a quick dash to the city and back. Trains are frequent, the trip takes only about 10 minutes and delivers you right in the center. Tickets you buy at the ticket window, or from a vending machine.

Hi Brad, You definately have time to do something in Zurich. Hop on a train to downtown. It only takes about 15 minutes, and they depart every 10. Because you'll be there early, many businesses (i.e. the Swiss National Museum(Tues-Sun 10am), among others) won't be open yet. But you can take the family on your own self-guided tour. From the train staion, walk south, following the river. Pass by Lindenhof Park to St. Peter's Church. Continue South to Fraumunster Church, then to Burklinplatz for a view of the lake. Then cross the river, and begin north to the Grossmunster Church. You can continue on Munstergrasse (which I believe turns into Niederdorfstrasse), or make a left and then right to follow along the river north. Here, I'm sure you'll be able to find shops or a cafe open for a snack/breakfast stop. By the time you get back to the station, the museum may be open. The walk should only take a couple of hours. Hope I helped! -Todd
