DIY from Lusaka to Lake Tanganyika

Hi everybody! Does anybody know if it is possible to go with public transport from Lusaka to Lake Tanganyika (and hopefully to Kigoma)? How long does it take? Does it make sense to book a tour or a guide or something? Thank you! Mirko
