by oz_jarrod Online Now Aug 21, 2006 at 10:39 PM

Hi everyone! I've been reading these pages and getting some great information! thanks! My mate and I are travelling from australia and are spending a week in Zakopane over new year 06/07. Has anyone spent new year there before? What are the best places to go for a drink? We're planning about 5-6wks in hungary, poland, romania, etc but this is the week we're looking forward to the most. If anyone wants to meet up for a beer along the way feel free to email me at jarrode77@hotmail.com

If u are travelling through Central europe, a good resource is www.inyoupocket.com This is a brilliant updated guide online & booklet. Having been to Krakow & Zakopane twice in the last 3 years I would recommend Papparazi [wrong spelling - too lazy] There is a chain of them & Monica who runs the Zakopane one with her husband lived in Australia for a couple of years & is reallt great. Has good advice for visiting the local area. Hungary & Poland are bloody sensational - just be wary of the scams in Budapest as mentioned in the inyourpocket booklet -saved me! Have a look at my external page.

The main drag in Zakopane has most of the bars and cafes. We were there in Summer 2005 and most places closed about midnight. I'm sure it will be different for New Year's Eve. The cable car and funicular should be an experience and worth a look. I've posted a few tips on Zakopane and I'm sure they are relevant for winter trips but don't try the mountain walks. Enjoy the bands! The beer's fine although Ocacim is an acquired taste. Flavoured vodka's ae more like liqueuers but worth trying. Cheese on toast snacks and lard sandwiches too! Meals are basic and wholesome. It's not a big place but I'm sure there will be enough places to keep you happy.
