Travelling Budapest to Zagreb, then to Rome

Hi, A friend and I going to travel from Budapest to Rome, desperately hoping to stop in Croatia. We were thinking of Budapest to Zagerb by train, then wondering how to get to Rome. Any idea, on what is the best way to go to Rome from there (cheapest/fastest way), and also if there are other alternatives to the bus between Budapest and Zagreb??? Many thanks :-0)
