Hello, My friend and I are going to be travelling from Bratislava to Zagreb then from Zagreb to Split in early July. The prices that rail Europe are quoting me for these journeys is well over £100 per person per journey which seems very expensive. Does anyone know the cheapest way to book trains to and from Zagreb? In early July if I book a train a day in advance do you think that there will still be seats/sleeper accommodation available? I am very tempted to just book my trains direct at the train station in Bratislava and Zagreb even if it means I might not be able to secure sleeper car. As long as I can at least have a seat. Does anyone else agree that this would be cheapest/ most sensible way to go? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Cheers fae Glasgow. Lisa
There are no night trains from Bratislava to Zagreb, so no need to book these in advance. So you can just buy that in Bratislava. The train station in Bratislava will probably also be able to book a sleeper from Zagreb to Split too, but the day train on that route is certainly an valid option, and quite nice.

DON'T BUY THE WHOLE JOURNEY IN BRATISLAVA! You will pay much more. Better: 1) Buy Bratislava -> Budapest round-trip (costs less, than one-way), 17.50 Euro 2) Buy Budapest -> Split "there" with Koprivnica -> Gyékényes "back" portion in Budapest, that costs 0.4 * (83.40 + 2.80) = 34.48 Euro The "0.4" multiplier is for a round-trip - however, anyting going back from anywhere in Croatia to anywhere in Hungary counts as a round-trip, so I did chose the shortest one, between two border towns. That will transform the otherwise one-way non-discounted ticket into a round-trip ticket discounted by a whopping 60%. Now of course if you go round-trip anyway - than just buy the Budapest - Split round-trip for 68.80 Euro, that ticket is valid for a month, the Bratislava - Budapest likewise. Do not buy the one-way for that either. An other option: buy in Bratislava a Bratislava - Sturovo Slovak domestic ticket on the train you going to Budapest and buy a Sturovo - Budapest "special" for 6 Euro. The price is a bit less, than the 17.50 but the ticket buying procedure takes longer obviously.

Thanks Gyurift, Sound advice. I have two questions if you wouldn't mind answering them for me please. 1) I was told by rail europe to get to Zagreb from Bratislava I must go through Vienna. Is the Bratislava - Budapest - Split train a better option? 2) Great advice on buying the round trip from Budapest to Split to save money, thank you so much. Will it be easy to communicate my needs for the trip at Budapest station given my poor Hungarian pronunciation? My Scottish accent can throw even the best English speakers so do you recommend I simply write down what you have suggested in English and hand it to the clerk at the station? Is this acceptable when booking tickets? Apologies for this strange question, but across Europe I have found that communicating with a Glasgow girl can be quite an experience. Thanks again for your very knowledgeable advice, it is much appreciated. Cheers Lisa

>>> 1) I was told by rail europe to get to Zagreb from Bratislava I must go through Vienna. Is the Bratislava - Budapest - Split train a better option? Much-much-much better and much-much-much cheaper. The advice was from someone who never was in the area. Crazy. >>> 2) Great advice on buying the round trip from Budapest to Split to save money, thank you so much. Is this acceptable when booking tickets? Well, that depends. If you are unsure I can send you the tickets. Done that for other VT-ers, to UK the postage is ca.4 or less, that is priority + registered with limited tracking. Otherwise have to go to Sturovo sometimes this or next week, so no problem at all. All I need from you is the EXACT itinerary you plan, i.e. what you do after Split and (roughly) the day you start in Bratislava. If you tell the exact day, than the price will be a little less as I can purchase Slovak domestic ticket (valid 24 hours from a given date) instead of the 17.50 Euro generic Bratislava - Budapest round-trip (valid one month).

BTW: the direct Budapest - Split train is twice a week and on *** some *** there are sleepers or couchettes still available. The sleeper / couchette is in 10 - 21 Euro extra. If I know the day, I can check. If you are lucky, you have the sleeper straight from Budapest, that depends on the day. On Tuesdays there is Russian sleeper extra, that costs less. On Fridays there is only Hungarian sleeper and couchette. Prices here (for Hungarian service, Russian sleeper costs bit less - but almost everything seem to be booked out of Moscow, maybe few extra places appear in the same car out of Budapest) mav-start.hu/utazas/horvat_t... Your train is the number 1204.
