Internet/Cellphone Connection

by CdnJane Online Now May 29, 2012 at 1:16 PM

Just curious about the main connection. I have Rogers as my provider for the cellphone. Who covers Whitehorse area and/or Haines Junction? Is it worth taking a Rocket stick up there? What about connection when taking the Alaska Ferry up - while going through the Inside Passage is there connection? Or is it a roaming area or blanked out area? Oh dear, sounds like I want to be in contact everywhere. More curiosity than anything else since I'm not a text-er and rarely ever turn on my cellphone anywhere else!

Bell and a few others (like Telus) service parts of Yukon, but Rogers is not one of them. In Whitehorse you'll find a 3G network (4G coming?) next to a 1X network. The latter network you will find in the communities, but you will need to have a 1X phone. Most smartphones work in Whitehorse only. Some venues offer WiFi, so if your phone can do that, you still can communicate from certain spots, communities only, not along the road). At sea you are mostly too far off any community, so nothing there, except when near or in a community. I don't know about the providers in the Alaskan communities. My cell (1X) works in Skagway.

Thanks for your reply. I did change my Rogers with a US roaming package, and then in Haines purchased a weeks worth of internert that covered us in Haines and then in Skagway, and the ports from the ferry. Was a little frustrated in Whitehorse with the phone booths and not being able to use my cell to check in with my elderly mother for the one day. Didn't do too bad with getting connections in Alaska, so could get some e-mails every day. Afraid I'm getting addicted to my smartphone.... *sigh*

Hi Jane, Yes, frustration for many, blessing for some .... for me, I like being able to escape from the modern world once in a while, still possible in Yukon! Next time you may think about a Telus prepaid card, available from5 and up. With this card you can call long distance from any phone anywhere without any additional charges. You have to key in quite some numbers, but the rates/minute are really good. Just a thought.
