looking for hotel in best location in York

by cherylinrenonevada Online Now Jan 28, 2011 at 10:01 AM

Hi all, I received a ton of responses (all good suggestions) on my question regarding buying a converter charger thingy for my ipod/cameras- thank you all! Now I am trying to find a hotel for 2 older British ladies and myself, who will be staying in York for 2 days. These are relatives of mine. I need a hotel with a good breakfast-no greasy fat laden stuff. I like a buffet with eggs, toast, cereal, etc. Anyone have any ideas for a place in the central area of things, with a great breakfast and not too pricey? Cheryl

I always avoid clicking on any bit.ly address posted on this forum; one does not know where they will lead. I cannot recommend anywhere in the city centre as I have always stayed slightly further out, although within walking distance (rates are a little cheaper) apart form once (see below). But you do have plenty of choice, and do not need to fear 'greasy' breakfasts. These are *always* optional in the UK anyway, and you will find all hotels have cereals, toast, preserves etc available as well. Boiled eggs are often available too (and scrambled), and many hotels also offer fresh fruit, yoghurts etc etc. The official tourist information website lists all accommodation in York: http://www.visityork.org/accommodation/ It is difficult to make specific recommendations without knowing your budget but I thoroughly enjoyed my short stay at the Churchill Hotel: http://www.churchillhotel.com/ and my daughter spent her wedding night in the Grange Hotel very to the Churchill: http://www.grangehotel.co.uk/ (both hotels also on booking.com). My York pages have reviews. I suggest you look for hotel reviews on www.booking.com , even if you do not book through the site (many of us Vt-ers use it for hotels in the UK and elsewhere). This is a reliable site where reviews can only be posted by people who have booked through the site and completed their stay (many other sites have no such restriction, so the veracity of reviews can be very dubious). I suggest

In terms of the location the Dean Court has the prime site in York. I've never stayed there, I was born and brought up in York - so I still have free B&B :-), but it has a good reputation and outstanding reviews. I think the near-by Guy Fawkes Inn (tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Revi... is possibly a bit cheaper. I can say that the food and beer are both excellent there.

By the way, that bit.ly address leads to Tripadvisor's page about New York hotels. This is the York forum. In the UK. :-)

Having family in York, and having lived there, I haven't tried many of the hotels, but last time we actually DID stay in one and that was the Premier Inn (York City - there are two more further out), since we were travelling by train and it's very close to the station as well as central (and on "our" side of the city). Premier Inn is a chain so it's not very personal, but it is reliable in that you know what you will get, and the beds are comfy and rates usually very good for what you get. You pick your own breakfast things and staff were friendly here even by Premier Inn standards. If you will walk a lot, you will have an uphill walk along Micklegate to get back from the Minster area after a day's sightseeing, perhaps not what the older ladies might want, but otherwise it's central. Someone mentioned Dean Court, and that's probably the best location you can get amongst York hotels, as long as you can stand the Minster bells, but very expensive for what you get I think. I think the ones leics mentioned are better in that case, and just a bit further out in that direction. You have some major chains in the Castle area of the city too, but judging by Tripadvisor, they're not that good. In the part of York where I first lived, there is a great little hotel with walking distance to everything and its own garden despite being within the city walls: http://www.ladyannes.co.uk/ They sometimes have good rates.
