    • Where to go at Mid / East Java for a family with kids

      Java 16 hours ago

      Dear all,

I'm actually already roughly organizing our roundtrip for next summer (mid-July / mid-August). We're a family with two daughters who recently became 6 & 8 y/o and we intend to visit Northern Sumatra, Java, Lombok and Bali. Northern Sumatra, Lombok and Bali are quite easy to schedule and organize myself. However, I'm strugling with the Javanese part since it's huge and we need to skip certain parts preventing ourselves from being too rushed and being in a time squeeze. We do have 8/9 days for Java in mind.

Yogya and it's surroundings are a must for us (also quiet for the kids when we do have our Yogya hotel as a ground base for several days). Also Mt. Bromo (eastern Java) are a must for us. So a trip from Yogya to Malang / Bromo (with 2 or 3 overnights during this trip) is something which I do have in mind. After Bromo we intend to catch the flight from Surabaya to Lombok.

My question is which village / small town is nice to have a stop for 1 / 2 nights when travelling from Yogya to Malang. 1. We actually consider Serangang (which seems quite in the middle between Yogya / Malang). Solo is also interesting, but this is still quite far away from Malang.

      2. We also hear good stories about Kediri / Blitar, but here again....Blitar is quite close to Malang already and driving time from Yogya to Blitar is quite long.

Any further opinions / feedback welcome! If you consider below schedule the best for a family with kids (5&7 y/o), let me know as well.

      30 juli: Medan - Yogya
      31 juli: Yogya (Borobudur)
      1 aug: Yogya
      2 aug: Yogya
      3 aug: Yogya - Serangan
      4 aug: Serangan
      5 aug: Serangan - Malang
      6 aug: Malang
      7 aug: Malang - Bromo
8 aug (Monday): Mt Bromo (Sunrise / Vulcano / (avoid Mt. Bromo in the weekend) - Surabaya
      9 aug: Surabaya - Lombok

Many thanks for your input and feedback and sorry for this long introduction....:-)

      Regards, Roger

      Volcanoe disruption

      Bali Aug 6, 2015 at 1:58 AM

Hi hoping someone can give me a little advice and support. We are due to fly out to Hong Kong this Sat with Cathay Pacific and then on to Bali on the 11th Aug. Does anyone know if Dragonair flights are being affected by the volcano ash? I can see lots of info for Virgin and Jetstar from Australian travellers but not a lot for other airlines. Cathay Pacific have very generic info on their website. I really don't know what to do, beginning to worry about flying to HK and getting stuck there! Booked everything ourselves, although insurance does at least cover us for the ash.
Hoping for a little friendly support to stop me panicking!
      Thanks Jeannette

    • 10 days in Bali (+ Lombok/Gilli) over Christmas / New Year

      Bali Aug 23, 2015 at 3:55 AM

      Hi all,

I've spent quite a bit of time looking at suggested 10-day itineraries for Bali, but yet I still don't seem to have managed to find one that I feel works for me. I'm in Bali for 10 full days (11 nights), arriving on Christmas Eve and staying on until the 4th January. I will be arriving and departing from Denpasar

I'm not a big beach-goer or into surfing, though having said that, I would still like to fit in a couple of days at a quiet, relaxing beach. I will be travelling alone, and am in my mid-twenties. I don't drink, so I'm not looking for parties/bars/wild nights. I'm interested in exploring the history and culture, with a bit of down-time thrown in. I'm interested in the local life, scenery, food and exploration - so spending days at a beach resort is not too appealing - though some relaxation time on an authentic local beach would be lovely. I would also like to try and fit in Lombok and a couple of nights on one of the Gili islands - though I get the feeling that this might be trying to cram in too much.

At the moment, my rough itinerary is:

      24/12 EVENING ARRIVAL

      25/12 Bali (Ubud)

      26/12 Bali (Ubud)

      27/12 Bali (Ubud)

      28/12 Bali (Ubud)

      29/12 Lombok (Senggigi?)

      30/12 Lombok (Senggigi?)

      31/12 Gilli (Gilli T?)

      01/01 Gilli (Gilli T?)

      02/01 Bali (Sanur?)

      03/01 Bali (Sanur?)

      04/01 AFTERNOON DEPARTURE

I would be ever so grateful if you could share some ideas on which areas might be best for me to visit/stay for each of the proposed stops - as well as let me know if the itinerary is realistic. I would like the trip to be as comfortable as possible (I'm not a backpacker/hostel type), though, having said that, I will be on a budget (perhaps 3-star). As my trip is over the festive season, do you think that the date allocation for each stop is appropriate or should I make changes to the order that I plan to make each stop? I would also like the order of the itinerary to be appropriate and practical for departing for the next stop on my trip.

I have found that there are just so many variations and possible itineraries that cater for different interests, and I have just found it all very overwhelming, and not found a detailed itinerary that fully grabs me.

      Thanks in advance!

    • Effects of Volcanic Ash in the city

      Bali Aug 8, 2015 at 7:36 AM

I wonder if someone who is now in Bali can provide an update on the pollution level as a result of the volcanic ash. There was a report on BBC - August 7, showing damage to local crops and the thick ash on the crops and the locals using face masks. Would it be advisable to bring face mask for people going there in the next few days? In the hotels does the ash cover the surfaces...beds, tables, etc.? Just wanted to know what kind of an experience it is at this time. Thank you.

      Visas, payments and money exchange

      Bali Aug 1, 2015 at 5:04 AM

Hi hoping for some up to date advice...

      1) Am I correct that since June 2015 the visa-free policy is granted to foreign nationals of 30 additional countries and this now includes the UK so we will not now need to pay the US 35 dollar entry visa fee?

      2) Is there a charge for departing the country as I have also read that the departure tax should be included in flight price. I'm getting confused reading advice to other people, on different forums on other sites. Any up to date advice would be great.

      3) I know it is best to change to IDR there so would you take GBP travellers cheques or cash?

      Thanks JB

    • Three weeks in Bali 27th February and Alcohol

      Bali Aug 20, 2015 at 12:32 PM

My wife and I are due to spend about 3 weeks in Bali. We are both aged related pensioners and my last visit to a Muslim country was many years ago where alcohol was and is still prohibited. Not wishing to offend but like to have a glass or two of wine, especially with meals, I ask for advice. Not wanting to stay in 5 star hotels but prefer small guest house. Are there such places, that serve alcohol as in reasonably priced; Gin and Tonics, and wine ?
Are there off licences/ stores where wines are readily available ?
Can anyone advise on the best area for us to get a taxi to from the airport, to find such a Guest House, private facilities and hopefully a sea view. We will already have spent two months travelling so cost must be considered. We look for a; peaceful, tranquil setting but reasonably central for a few day excursions and site seeing.

25/9 - arriving at Yogiakarta at 12h30, get taxi to go to Candi Sukuh, stay in Solo
26/9 - visit Solo and return to Yogi, sleep at Manohara in Borobudur
27/9 - Borobudur temples and surroundings, sleep in Prambanam

      29/9 - visit Yogiakarta

I would appreciate your comments and advising. Does it make sense to hire car and driver for added mobility or is it better to use a becak?

    • Yogyakarta at 6h20 AM, accommodation, bus, storage?

      Yogyakarta Apr 4, 2014 at 5:08 PM

      Hi,
I will catch a flight from Lombok to Yogyakarta, but the only cheap fly (with Lion Air) arrive at 6h20 AM in Yogya. What can I do with my backpack (70 liter) until I can check in in my accommodation? I don’t have booking cause I want to see the room before taking it. Does anyone know a safe place where I can leave my backpack until I check in? Can I leave my backpack at the police station? Can I trust them? If so, is there a police station in town?
Also, do you have a safe, clean and cheap accommodation to suggest? I’m on a budget and I saw rooms around 100 000-120 000 roupies, but there’s not much info about them on trip advisor.
And last questions: which bus goes from the airport to town? And which street can I find most of the guesthouse, homestay or budget hotel?
      Thanks a lot!

3 days 2 night itinerary and driver in Yogyakarta and Burobudur

      Yogyakarta Mar 12, 2014 at 1:47 AM

      Hello all!

My friend and I are planning a 3 days 2 nights trip to Yogya and Burobudur. We likw culture and history and have planned the itinerary as follows:

      Day 1
      Arrive in Yogya airport 1pm
      Lunch in Yogya
      Prambanan
Ratu Boko (is it worth going?)
Check in hotel (appx 10-15 drive from Burobudur)

      Day 2
      Burobudur Sunrise Tour
      Burobudor whole day
Lunch and dinner at nearby hotels (walkable from the monument)

      Day 3
      Check out hotel after breakfast
      Drive to Yogya
      Lunch in Yogya
      Souvenir shopping

I have contacted a few drivers and received quotation of appx 350k to 450k rupiah for each day (Day 1 and 3). Is this price reasonable? What is the usual price for car and driver hire? Essentially I only need the driver for about 6-7 hours per day but it seemed that the price quoted is for a full day trip?

Appreciate any advise or further suggestions!

      Thanks!

From Yogyakarta to Borobodur at 5 AM?

      Yogyakarta Feb 1, 2014 at 10:14 AM

Hi, I am not sure if it is a good idea, but I was thinking about traveling by night traing from Jakarta to Yogyakarta.
If I am not mistaken then there is a train available that leaves Jakarta at 9 PM and arrives Yogjakarta at 4.22 AM.
I was wondering, what on earth shall I do in yogjakarta at this time of the day?
Then I came up with the idea of visiting Borobodur before Sunrise.
Is this a rather stupid idea?
Are luggage lockers available in Yogjakarta?
Are any early morning tours available?
Or should I take a taxi?
How much time does it take from Yogjakarta to Borobodur?
Is a closer train station available?
Is there an early morning service in the temple available?

How much is the appropriate charge to hire a taxi?

      Yogyakarta Oct 5, 2013 at 8:00 PM

Hi, this is my first question about barobudur-prambanan.\

I would like to go to Yogyakarta next year, maybe from late January to early February.
I will travel alone and would like to find travelers to visit barobudur-prambanan together, but just in case, I would like to know how much the appropriate charge for hiring taxi for one day or a half day.

      Here is my plan
Day 1 Fly from Jakarta by Lcc, use a taxi to the guesthouse.

How much is the charge from the airport to downtown?

      Day2 Hire a taxi to visit barobudur-prambanan , I will arrange a taxi at a gueshouse

I would like to know the charge.

Day3 Walk around downtown or go to a famous place, sorry I didn't research yet!

      So give me some advice!

Day4 Back to Jakarta by Lcc

I would like to join the tour from Jakarta but it is very expensive around 700 US dollar for 2days 1nigt, because the tour I found is basiclly for 2 ppl at the same hotel room or guesthouse.

Moreover I am Japanese and some ppl advise me not to use Japanese agency due to higher price than others.

Do you know a reasonable agency in Yogyakarta or can I arrange private tour with Taxi driver or bike rider at a guesthouse?

If you helped me, it would be wonderful!

I have three days around New Year 2014 to see a few things outside Jogja (not nearby temples like Borobodur and Prambanan which I will see while staying in Jogja). I am willing to hire a car and driver and guide.
      1. Which little trip could I make?
      2. Do you know a reliable travel agent who could organize it?
