Question for my next destination

by amsterdamvt Online Now Oct 5, 2011 at 11:35 PM

Hello dear VT-friends,
Since I've changed my mind (I switched from Yerevan to Budapest).
I would like to thank all of you for responding.
I'm still doubting anyway. But money and schedule are not in the right position to do both...Do you people suggest the best: Budapest or Yerevan? Looking for culture and ancient architecture!
My schedule will be: Traveldates from 18 until 20 octobre 2011. Maybe there are some nice festivals or so. Looking for a fancy place to have a nice diner as well at the 19th of octobre. Please let me know and thanks a lot again! I'll post a message on the Budapest forum as well ;-)

But i've always been one for more exotic locations. Armenia see very few tourists. However, Yerevan is a new capital, established by the Soviets. Nothing ancient there. And with only 2 days, it is unlikely you will get a chance to head out of the capital to the UNESCO sites.

Budapest is one of the great European capital. They use a script you can read. There is a much higher level of English. And literally millions more tourists. It is the 'easy' choice.

I agree with the previous post. There isn't ancient architecture in Yerevan, you have to go out of the city to see older buildings.

I personally really prefer Budapest to Yerevan. Budapest is a beautiful city, full of wonderful architecture from the height of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (late 1800's). It also has some nice Turkish architecture from the 1500's. Yerevan, on the other hand, is a very Soviet-looking city, full of ugly apartment buildings, although it does have a few very nice old churches tucked away here and there.

Yerevan didn't become capital cuz of Soviets. The Soviet Union was established in 1922 wile Yerevan was a capital in 1918! Is your choice to prefer Budapest, but please do not share fake information. Budapest is definitely a nice city, but Yerevan is not any worse. It is situated on the crossroad of Europe and Asia and bears both cultures. You can hardly find such a unique culture elsewhere.

I still stand by my response. I really enjoyed visiting Yerevan. The city was vibrant and the people were very friendly, but there is not a lot of historic buildings in the city. Yes, I realize that there is a long history of Yerevan, but most of the building were built during the Soviet era or later.
