Best route from West Michigan to Mt. Rushmore to Yellowstone

by howie60 Online Now May 27, 2012 at 3:35 PM

Will be taking an RV to Yellowstone with a stop at Mt Rushmore. What is the best route from SW Michigan? Also, looking for an RV park near there that takes 40' RV's. What else is there to look at on the way?

While you are in the area, Wind Cave National Park is not too far South from Mt. Rushmore, and is an enjoyable area to explore. As long as you are coming all the way from Michigan, it might be worth your time to travel a little farther and visit Deadwood, which is a small town that is filled with historical buildings and reminders from the town's early gold-rush boom years. Famous people, such as Wild Bill Hickock, Calamity Jane, Wyatt Earp, and Dock Hilliday spent time in Deadwood. In 1964 Deadwood became the only city in the United States to be named a National Historic Landmark. It seems like most of the historic buildings along main street now house gamboling casinos, but these earn money to preserve the history of the area. I am not a gambler, but have stopped in Deadwood a number of times just for the rich history of the area. With a 40' rv, you should not try to go through the park with this vehicle. Just park in one of the close towns and rent a car to go explore for the day. The distances alone make driving a vehicle like this prohibitive because of fueling points and clearance issues. Most pullouts just were not made for such large vehicles. Your RV, while great for the open road is not so agile in mountains or on curvy roads. Leave the RV in Rapid City, South Dakota when you explore the "Black hills". Just take I90 to Buffalo, Wyoming and north on I25/I90 to Sheridan, Wy. and to Billings, Mt. OR south from Buffalo, WY. to Casper, WY to Shashoni and up the Wind River Canyon to Thermopolis, Cody, and west into Yellowstone national park. The reason that I say this is because large vehicles have a hard time crossing the Black hills and are just plain dangerous crossing the 9,000ft+ passes from buffalo and sheridan westward. If you have never driven a Semi-tractor trailer in the mountains, don't even try it!
