I will be in Xi'an next month. Will I be able to get a train ticket from Xi'an to Beijing 2 days in advance? Do the clerks at the station speak English? Thanks!
Yes, I booked five soft sleeper tickets to Beijing 2 days in advance. Shouldn't be too difficult to communicate with tickets sales. Just mentioned Beijing and show by hand number of tickets and date/time of travel. You can read more about the trains from Xi'an to Beijing from my travel page.

English is being spoken a bit more in China (more by the young people) but you should have no trouble explaining what you want. You can use a combination of hand signals and I find that even drawing a picture can help. I found the Chinese to be very friendly and patient with foreigners.

You should find your hotel will do the booking for you, that is what I did only the opposite way, Beijing to X'ian, soft sleeper, it was about 2 or 3 days before we left, my hotel did not charge for this service, some possibly might but it was very easy and hassal free. When we got to X'ian we then got the hotel there to book our flight to Shanghai, again no problems.

If you have a problem finding an English speaker then ask a concierge in a large hotel to help (even if you are not staying there). They will write it down for you.

Hi I dont think the station clerks speak english but i'm pretty sure they will understand you. Why dont you book an air ticket to beijing instead? If you book the air ticket in advance(one month), the price is around 300 cny. The train ticket will cost you around 200-300cny, but it will take at least 12hours of your time.
