xian enroute datong

hi, we are thinkng of stopping at datong for a day to see the yungang caves on our way from beijing to xian. When i try to check for the train schedule, the datong-xian or xian-datong takes 16 hours. its on the 1673 non-air con train. Are there any other train time or should i be taking a bus from datong to xian ? If so, can anyone provide the departure times and time taken for the bus travel. Thanks!

From a friend's personal experience it was impossible to get a sleeper for Datong -- Xi'an, she ended up flying.

I try to find a flight from Datong to Xian on May 14th, can someone help me with that for a reasonable price?

Hello:
My former client who also came cross the same problems, that final solution of them is using the public bus to Taiyuan, then take flight to xian from there.
