Hello, I'm going to Japan in September for the 1st time and would love some advice on "must try" restaurants in Tokyo, Kyoto and maybe Osaka. I have no special dietary requirements. I love food, I think it's what makes a trip fun and special sometimes to experience the gastronomical experience that the country can offer. Thank you
Oh, where to start!? In Osaka, I recommend that you go to Shinsaibashi/Yodobashi area and try Okonomiyaki, Takoyaki, etc., from street carts and/or from shops with a small window by the grill. I love the cold Udon noodle and tofu dishes made with tofu just produced that morning. In Tokyo, you can try from ramen noodle to great sushi to Robata ..... I mean, even the fast food restaurants will give you different experiences in Japan. If you are looking for unique experiences, try Tachigui-soba at some of the train stations, where you eat standing at the noodle shop counter, and Bento-box sold at train stations. Each train station usually have unique one made with the local ingredients.

All the major department stores and malls have food courts on their upper floors that are much more than what we call a food court in the states (ie its not fast food). The restaurants in these food courts have window displays of the food they serve along with the price. Its great just to wander around until you find something that looks good. One thing not to be missed is Okonomiyaki (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okonom.... Its an egg dish with your selection of filling serve up like a pancake.

If you have never been to Japan before it's almost impossible to recommend a restaurant to you. How will you find it? The large cities are so thick that living here requires a GPS on you phone to pinpoint locations. For a tourist, trying to locate one spot is almost impossible. When I would come to Japan as a tourist I would wander for an hour or longer trying to find an address I found on a website - almost never would I find what I was looking for and I would give up and pick the next thing that happened along. The best experiences will happen by accident, just follow your nose and see what you find.

I suggest you enjoy every dining establishment you encounter. You will notice that food is really different in Japan: creative, colorful - all edible. Dont miss to try the Japanese wine "sake" its good with "shabu-shabu" stir fry assortment of veggies and lean beef or pork. happy dining!
