'Allo! First-time international traveler here, badly in need of sage advice. I live in the US and I'll be flying over to the UK in June to meet up with my girlfriend. I already have my passport, plane tickets, accommodations, etc.; what I'm mostly interested in is what I can expect to encounter going through an international airport. I'll be bringing a few gifts for her -- silk rose in my carry-on (for when we meet at the airport; I'm a hopeless romantic), a Wacom Inkling (computerized drawing pen worth about200 USD) another gift worth about80 USD (a collectable with some electronic parts), and -- I know this is going to sound strange, but -- a box of Lucky Charms cereal (her one special request for "something from the states"). Having never been through customs before, what can I expect? Will any of my gifts require me to go through special procedures or pay a fee? I'm just really nervous and want this to go off well, so any advice from seasoned travelers is more than welcome!
You don't need to declare any of that, nor should you have any expectation of any issues. After picking up your bags, walk right through the Green Channel at customs ("nothing to declare"). In the UK, there are no officials even visible as you pass through (although there is a two-way mirror through which they can see who's going by). Enjoy your trip!

just a practical note, make sure you put all the valuable/fragile items in your cabin bag so you will make sure you don't bump them, they can be a little rough trowing the check in baggage on the plane! My boyfriend took a kitchen aid stand mixer from the us to italy so I believe you will be just fine at custom. Enjoy your trip!

I haven't done much international travel, but having flown around Europe within the past month and having flown in and out of Heathrow Airport in London from Chicago during that time here are my answers. As already said you will not have to declare any of those items, and if anything is breakable you should carry it on board. In fact, with those 3 items you could easily carry those on board. I am going to assume you are flying into London Heathrow. If not, ignore all the following advice. We landed at Heathrow at the same time as 2 other jumbo jets, so most of the people going through customs were not UK citizens. (They have 2 separate lines for passport control - one for UK citizens and the other for everyone else.) The line for passport control was about 90 to 100 minutes. You will fill out a card that they will give you on the plane with your name, address, passport number, occupation, length of stay and reason for visit. When you finally get up to passport control you will give your passport and this card to the agent who will check the passport and the card and probably ask the purpose for your visit. You will then go pick up any checked in luggage and then proceed past the customs area as others have said because you really don't have anything to declare.

Oh, and by the way in all my years of domestic travel and now a little bit of international travel I have yet to have anything stolen from my bag. I usually have my dirty clothes on top so if anybody does decide to peak . . . But it is good advice to carry valuables and any medications with you. Pack clothing and anything else that is easily replaceable.

When we came through BA's Terminal 5 at Heathrow in April the queue for UK/EU Passport Holders was pretty busy but the other one was moving very slowly. There have been so many complaints that additional staff are now supposed to be on duty so hopefully it will be improved for our overseas visitors. Yes - do pack valuables in your carry-on baggage and one rarely hears of theft from checked luggage these days - it has certainly never happened to me in over 40 years of travelling by air. Have a great trip.

I have no problem bringing my one medication in the original bottle. I don't think there would really be a need to bring the prescription order especially if it is a very common medication like mine.

I would never check any type of electronic device. My camera, camcorder and now my iPad are always by my side.

I assume you have a return ticket?

They have 2 separate lines for passport control - one for UK citizens and the other for everyone else Not true. The two queues/lines are for EU/EEA passport holders and all other passport holders (which of course includes US passport holders).

I would suggest not having anything in your luggage that is gift wrapped. Or you may end up having to unwrap it for either security or customs which would be a shame! Check out the weight restrictions for hand luggage as well, some airlines are really strict on this. And make sure there is nothing sharp in the gifts too, they will confiscate anything vaguely sharp, even tweazers.(though you can put sharp things in your hold luggage)If you haven't flown before, then do also read the instructions on fluids in hand luggage. You're ok to travel trans-altantic with dried food like cereal but there are restrictions on certain fresh produce and anything with soil so watch what you bring home with you! Sounds very romantic, I hope you have a wonderful trip and enjoy the UK!

My mistake, sorry! But as a US citizen he will be in the same line as the one we were in.

You should have no problem at all.

I can't see that there will be a problem at all. Go through the green exit - 'nothing to declare' after collecting your luggage. Hayley :)

I don't think you will have any problems as they just said above, but since It's your FIRST INTERNATIONAL TRIP I assume you're abit nervous which is normal. Some immigration officials can be so rude and you shouldn't try to be smart with them,Stay calm and be HONEST when responding to their questions (If they do Ask you). Enjoy your trip...

Do you think they might have a problem with the flower? I know we have problems with shipping wood from one country to the next because of local insects and other illness that might be in them. It might be better to pick it up there.
